LAWSUIT?

Parton "shocked" at Howard Stern radio segment

By Jonathan Cohen, Reuters

NEW YORK — Country music star Dolly Parton has hit back against Howard Stern's satellite radio show, which last week manipulated recordings from one of her audio books into seemingly racist and sexually graphic sound bites.

"I have never been so shocked, hurt and humiliated in all my life," Parton said in a statement on Wednesday. "I cannot believe what Howard Stern has done to me. In a blue million years, I would never have such vulgar things come out of my mouth. They have done editing or some sort of trickery to make this horrible, horrible thing. Please accept my apology for them and certainly know I had nothing to do with this."

She concluded: "If there was ever going to be a lawsuit, it's going to be over this. Just wanted you to know that I am completely devastated by this."

"The Howard Stern Show" frequently utilizes audio book recordings in this fashion; altered clips from "Star Trek" actor George Takei became a staple of the program in recent years.

Entertainment - Parton "shocked" at Howard Stern radio segment
The Stern show does this to all the audio books on tape. It's nothing new. They messed with Ed McMahon's book, Jay Leno's and others.

However, in this instance I don't blame Dolly for being upset and I think a really heartfelt public apology is owed her and her fans by the person who edited the tape.

For what it's worth the regular live Stern broadcast show was not aired today. They played a "Best of" show instead.

Being a Stern fan and being somewhat familiar with how things go on I would guess that it was the work of one of the more moronic and clueless show members. I'm thinking "Sal the Stockbroker."

And this is one of the lessons that ALL of America has to learn about attributing false motives to a person or a cause simply because we think we are licensed to do so under the banner of free speech.

There IS a line. And most of the time those of us who cross the line are never called for it because it is about a politician, our government or even the USA, itself, and so there is no price to pay.

But in this instance, because Dolly Parton is concerned about her public persona, and rightly so, it is altogether reasonable that she be sensitive to being painted as a racist. I have reason to know that she is not racist and is one of the sweetest people you'd want to know. And the seed of any false and malicious rumor or insinuation that she might be racist is certainly something worth suing over.

They crossed the line and I can understand that this would be something that was personally hurtful to Dolly and harmful to her career.

I love the Stern show but Dolly is different. Being a White woman from the South (Tennessee) it is easy for some shumb dit to just assume she is bigoted against Blacks but unless they know it to be true they should not make jokes alluding to that because the public at large assumes these 'show business insiders' have insider knowledge about other show biz people and they might believe these rumors.

Verdict?

Dolly was right to be pissed.

I'm with Dolly right or wrong. But she is right. I will be glad when or if Americas obsession with morons begins to fade.

While I'm the first to admit THERE ARE some moronic aspects to the show it also is not your average moronic show.

Imagine a sometimes moronic show, sometimes character driven interplay of individual personalities and except for the people in secondary roles, NONE of them are moronic. In fact they are all pretty darned smart.

And that is just one of the things that makes this show different from your average moronic show.

And how many times have you listened to it?

(Be prepared for a quiz if you say you have listened at all.)

You are correct that I used the wrong word. How about adolescent?

"lets see your tits" isn't entertaining to me. It sounds like when I was 8. The shock value has subsided as I am sure his audience has. I don't know that for sure but I don't hear much about him anymore.

My wife was a bit of a fan at first. Bought the book blah blah. I never liked the guy. I don't like most radio personalities left or right or adolescent. Ed Shultz is a turd. As is Air America. I am bipartisan when it comes to hot air.

I find him very funny and interesting. After he got the $500 Million (Half a Billion Dollar) deal to come to Sirius Satellite Radio those who weren't fans and those who didn't subscribe didn't have to listen or hear about him. After all he was no longer offending anyone who didn't WANT to be 'offended.' (More like entertained.)

But his Half Billion Dollar deal wasn't without some strings. He had to bring new subscribers with him. And so they said that if you can generate a certain number of new subscribers you can earn this amount of money. He did and so, he did.

And as far as adolescent humor, well I do find some of it adolescent but so do I find some debates in some threads adolescent.

And as far as naked women? Stern says he is just trying to make us laugh.

Quote:
“I’m a comedian,” he said. “I just wanted to make people laugh in the morning.”

That may be. But asked if, now, there is at times little that distinguishes his show from that of the soft-core “Girls Gone Wild” video series (or even “Midnight Blue,” the longtime, soft-core chestnut of New York City public access television that had Al Goldstein as its host), Mr. Stern, of course, blanched yet again.

“I never thought Al Goldstein or ‘Girls Gone Wild’ was funny,” he said. “They’re salacious. But I don’t find any humor in ‘Girls Gone Wild.’ ”

“I’m not trying to tell you to come to satellite to hear a girl sit on the Sybian,” he said. “I’m telling you to come because the show is funny.”

Well I support your view on this because I like many people that drive others nuts. Like Tom Waits. I just don't care for Sterns show.

I like Howard Stern. But I have been a Dolly fan a lot longer. I don't think she would be involved in a frivolous law suit. Just not her M.O.

Stern has had some close calls with his shock jock stuff.
The first shock jock I ever heard was "Moby in the morning Show" in Houston in the eighties. I guess Howard surpassed that guy a long time ago .

Howard seems a reasonable and business savvy guy. We'll more than likely see a public apology. He might even ask Dolly to come on the show. I know I would tune in for that!

Right. We have a couple of old satellite radios around here somewhere. We had sirus and once we had the other one. All you do is renew. Actually wouldn't be a bad idea, cause right now I don't have a radio at all. I know it's somewhere We just moved in couple months ago, but I spotted my old Sirus in a box. And I even know where the box is! Life is good.
