That's what it looks like to me...

There may have been some element of racism among these culturally conservative voters, who support Democrats if they think the politician is strong and empathetic toward their struggles; Obama appeared neither.
Talk about a torturous sentence.
Quite frankly, it seems to contradict itself, in my interpretation.
"There may have been some element of racism among these culturally conservative voters..."
That, in and of itself, is pretty cut and dried. Not sure any other way to interpret that.
...culturally conservative voters, who support Democrats if they think the politician is strong and empathetic toward their struggles...
Saying that these voters will support a democrat IF the politician is strong and empathetic towards their struggles.
(I feel like I'm back in English class dissecting a sentence...)
...; Obama appeared neither (strong and empathetic toward their struggles)
Saying Obama appears to be neither "strong" nor "empathetic toward their struggles".
But wait a minute. The earlier clause seemed to indicate that they can support democrats IF they meet these two qualities that are supposedly lacking in Obama.
Right?
So the sentence automatically gives ANOTHER REASON WHY these specific voters may not vote for Obama, beyond "racism".
But that first clause is cut and dried. Allegations of "may have been some element of racism".
Why say that if you're about to explain another reason why these voters may not support Obama?
My interpretation? Author gets a
D.
