With the race for president heating up, surrogates for President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney tangle on this Sunday’s television talk shows.

And, in a sit-down interview taped while she was campaigning in Florida, first lady Michelle Obama discusses a wide range of issues on Univision’s “Al Punto.”

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), a potential Romney vice presidential choice, is on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” along with Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter and senior Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden.

On ABC, “This Week” has Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former Democratic congressman who was Obama’s first White House chief of staff, and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), another possible Romney running mate.

On NBC, “Meet the Press” hosts Romney campaign senior adviser Ed Gillespie and the two Senate whips – Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Jon Kyl of Arizona.

Its political roundtable also features anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, and NAACP President Ben Jealous.

On CNN, “State of the Union” also has Gillespie – and Virginia Gov. Bob. McDonnell, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, and Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, as well as Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former governor of Iowa.

And “Fox News Sunday” has Republican strategist Karl Rove and Democratic consultant Joe Trippi, along with swing-state Govs. Terry Branstad of Iowa and Rick Scott of Florida, both Republicans.

Bloomberg TV’s “Political Capital” hosts Bill Burton, the former Obama White House deputy press secretary who co-founded the Priorities USA Action super PAC.

Finally, C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” has Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), vice chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, interviewed by National Journal’s John Aloysius Farrell and Bloomberg News’s Richard Rubin.

Sunday talk show tip sheet

Updated for Sunday,July 22,2012

Quote:
The deadly mass shooting at the movie theater in suburban Denver will dominate this Sunday’s television talk shows.

Plans for guests from both presidential campaigns – President Barack Obama’s and Republican rival Mitt Romney’s – were scuttled after Friday’s early morning shooting in Aurora, Colo.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod will not appear as scheduled on NBC’s “Meet the Press” so the network can cover the latest shooting developments.

ABC’s “This Week” will also focus on the shooting, with the latest updates and analysis.

And CBS’s “Face the Nation” will have New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to discuss gun control.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also on CBS and on “Fox News Sunday.”

Additionally, Fox has the chairs of the House and Senate intelligence committees – Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). And it has a panel on the Colorado shooting with Weekly Standard editor William Kristol, former Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Liz Cheney and Fox News analyst Kirsten Powers.

On CNN, “State of the Union” has Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who’s also expected to discuss gun control. And it will have the bitter rivals in Virginia’s Senate race, Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine.

In another program shuffle, Univision’s “Al Punto” will now have Israel Ortega, editor at HeritageLibertad.org, and Dana Sanchez, a spokesperson for the Brady Campaign, which combats gun violence.

Finally, C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” has the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, interviewed by The Hill newspaper’s Jeremy Herb and Congressional Quarterly’s Frank Oliveri.

In an unusual twist, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor appear on this Sunday’s television talks shows – Scalia on “Fox News Sunday” and O’Connor on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

CBS also has Penn State President Rodney Erickson and a panel, including Sara Ganim of the Patriot-News and sportscaster Jim Rome, to discuss the Jerry Sandusky sexual assault scandal.

Additionally, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, also stops by.

On ABC, “This Week” has two top presidential advisers – former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, now a senior adviser to President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, and Kevin Madden, a senior adviser to Republican rival Mitt Romney.

And it previews Jonathan Karl’s interview with former Vice President Dick Cheney, his first since a heart transplant last March, which the network is rolling out in full on Monday.

CNN’s “State of the Union,” meanwhile, has Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), a potential Romney running mate.

NBC’s “Meet the Press” is preempted this Sunday by the network’s coverage of the Olympic games, which officially kicked off Friday in London.

Bloomberg TV’s “Political Capital” hosts House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” has Michigan Rep. Sander Levin, the ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, interviewed by Gail Russell Chaddock of the Christian Science Monitor and David Lightman from McClatchy Newspapers.

And, finally, Univision’s “Al Punto” has former Democratic New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, as well Gabriela Domenzain, the Obama campaign’s director of Hispanic press, and Jose Fuentes, the co-chairman of Romney’s Hispanic steering committee.
