Sunday talk show tip sheet

Updated for Sunday,08/24/08

Quote:
It’s all about Denver this Sunday, as the television networks decamp to the Pepsi Center to review veep week and preview the Democratic convention circus to come.

On NBC, “Meet the Press” has the weekend’s headline interviews: Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, a top counselor to Obama in the vice presidential selection process, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Is this the start of a higher-profile surrogate role for the late president’s daughter?

Tom Brokaw also moderates a discussion with Newsweek’s Jon Meacham, NBC’s Chuck Todd and PBS’s Gwen Ifill, who’ll moderate the October debate between the two vice presidential candidates. So, watch what she has to say about Obama’s VP selection.

CBS’s “Face the Nation” features two high-profile Democratic governors, Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas and Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania, as well as Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.)

Host Bob Schieffer also talks with Dan Balz, national political correspondent for The Washington Post.

Will Rendell go characteristically off-message discussing Clinton-Obama convention dramas? And how will Sebelius, a co-chair of the Democratic National Convention, handle the inevitable questions about Obama’s running mate, if she isn’t chosen?

Sebelius isn’t the only vice presidential prospect on the air Sunday. On “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace talks about Obama’s attempts to expand the electoral playing field with Democratic Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Bill Ritter of Colorado.

Plus: Wallace talks about Obama’s new running mate with communications director Robert Gibbs.

Wolf Blitzer talks in Denver with a virtual parade of would-be Democratic running mates on CNN’s “Late Edition,” hosting Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

How well will these top surrogates coordinate their messaging on Obama’s veep choice?

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C) and former Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe also stop by.

Will Clyburn, a former Clinton ally whose friendship with the former first family frayed during the Democratic primaries, comment on either Bill or Hillary’s widely anticipated convention speeches?

George Stephanopoulos incorporates a little partisan diversity on ABC’s “This Week,’ hosting former New York mayor – and 2008 Republican National Convention keynoter – Rudy Giuliani.

Stephanopoulos also does the Democratic convention thing, interviewing Obama strategist David Axelrod and discussing the latest political news with Time’s Mark Halperin and ABC political analysts George Will, Donna Brazile and Cokie Roberts.

Bloomberg’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt” scores the classic hometown interview with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, who’s about to become a national name.

Hunt also touches base with reporters on both the McCain and Obama campaigns and discusses the week’s political developments with Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson and National Review’s Kate O’Beirne.

National security is the theme of the day on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers,” where the guest is Gen. Victor Renuart, commander of U.S. Northern Command, and the questioners are UPI’s Martin Sieff and the Christian Science Monitor’s Gordon Lubold.

Not totally off the theme of the day: USNorthCom is headquartered in Colorado Springs, just south of Denver, and is an integral part of the massive security net that will envelop the convention.

If Sebelius was already booked for a Sunday talk show, why the hell did the media continue to report that she was a front-runner for the VP choice?

Oh ... and why in the hell is Caroline Kennedy qualified to choose our eventual President? That would be like someone becoming the Senator of one of our largest states that she doesn't even live in based on having been cheated on while picking out the White House china.

I know but they released this list "before" Biden was picked.

Again questioning peoples qualifications. What does it take to decide if you like someone or not? Are you qualified to vote? Why? Do you have a background in voting properly? Did you vote for Bush twice? Should you lose your voting privilege until you learn how do it right?

So I guess that means you can't really give me any reasons why Caroline Kennedy is qualified .

I mean, is it because she's the last one standing?

Is it because she once served as her uncle's intern ?

Oh wait, she is a lawyer. She told the lawyer to choose a lawyer. It's all making sense now. Left wing lawyers are conspiring to take over the world. I wonder if 'The Brain' has a law degree?

What does it take to be a qualified member of a search team? I want to know. Is it again that you need to be a politician? Your kinda afraid of people who aren't full time pols huh?

If this is her first time at it she did well. I like the pick. In fact it was my pick a while back. But who am I. And what are my qualifications.

But if there were issues unknown to the public, she could find out and kill the idea of him being nominated...

That's the difference between you saying "I'd pick that person." and a person running background checks saying "That person clears our findings."...

The question is "was Kennedy (and anyone else doing the checks) qualified enough to dig deep enough to ensure there are no skeletons that could come out between convention-time and election time?"...

Was John Edwards vetted?...Did C. Kennedy (or others) ask Edwards for clarifications?...Did she have him "staked out" or other investigations?...

Stuff like that is crucial...If she or her committee said "John...Did you have an affair?" and John said "No" and the conversation went no further, imagine what the situation would've been like if Edwards didn't come clean before the VP pick and Obama actually picked him...

Not only would it have been horrible for the campaign, but it would show that Kennedy was a complete failure in the vetting process...

Of course, we'll never know since Edwards faced the music before Obama had a chance to make a VP pick official...

Maybe when you pick a team to help pick a VP nominee you chose people from a wide variety points of view. What difference does it make f she was one of the members. I could see where you might have a case if they chose some moron. But they made the best pick available. They did well. Its like complaining that someone is rookie after he hits a homer.

Oh my ... it was really just a passing comment. It just struck me that she's never really accomplished anything of note, and is just a famous name Obama wanted to associate himself with in some way.

Its the same for Condi Rice. She s famous for being Condi Rice. She has failed at every job she has held in the government. And now as Sec of State our international relationships are strained. She is supposed to be a Russian expert. I guess thats why we have so much better relations with Russia then we did under Clinton for example.
