Default Rush Limbaugh: Media exaggerates Japan disaster

Quote:
WASHINGTON – Right-wing US radio host Rush Limbaugh said on his show Wednesday that the media is overplaying the nuclear crisis in Japan after last week's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami.

"We have all these people on the media who we've never heard of, never heard from ever before, making calls to evacuate," Limbaugh said on his show on Premiere Radio Networks.

He singled out a European Union organization for criticism, saying it was exaggerating the situation in Japan, where Friday's quake and tsunami have left thousands dead or missing, and touched off a nuclear crisis.

"Something called the EU energy agent is saying all this is uncontrollable.

"We had a panic story yesterday that one of the reactors was in the process of meltdown, and it was so bad all the workers had been sent out.

"Then we realized it was an error in translation -- they were just temporarily dispatched and were sent back in," he said.

The host of what is said to be the most listened-to radio show in America compared the disaster in Japan to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which he also insisted was not as bad as media reports said it was.
Tell me how does this idiot stay on the air?

OMG... I hate to say this. I really really really really really hate to say this. But I might agree with Rush.

I think we need to let the professionals handle the situation without media pressure and exaggeration. Good preparation is one thing, but 24 hour media coverage is a bit of sensationalism that is inappropriate.

His comments were specifically about the nuclear power plants, which so far have killed no one, but Are the center of coverage, not the earthquake and tsunami now believed to have killed over 12,000.

He's correct to do so, of course,l but for the networks, nuclear meltdown are just a lot sexier that a bunch of drowned and buried people.

Rush stays on the air, so that serious people can listen and hear what he actually says, as opposed to what the Silly People want to believe he said.

I think some gullible fear-mongers have taken the bait.

Quote:
Jay Lehr, science director at the Heartland Institute, has some advice for doomsayers wondering if radiation from the crippled Japanese nuke plants could mean massive local deaths and even cross the Pacific and reach America: calm down.

In an interview on Fox News today, Lehr told host Bill Hemmer that not only is the U.S. not at risk of experiencing nuclear fallout, but he also drew stark differences between atomic bombs and nuclear reactors.

“We only have to look at the worst nuclear disaster in history, that was Chernobyl, where there was no containment structure,” he said. “10 years later when all the facts were in there were less than 10 fatalities from that explosion — only people right near the plant were affected by the radiation, 1,000 people got leukemia, 998 were cured … . It was predicted that tens of thousands of people would get cancer … [but] this never happened. This is not an atomic bomb and people don’t understand a nuclear reactor is something very different than an atomic bomb.”

“There are horrible, horrible problems in Japan and the stress that this is creating is unwarranted, unnecessary,” he added, even going as far as to call stories about a possible meltdown — which he says won’t produce massive destruction — “fear mongering”:

I wouldn't know, I've never heard of this "Limpbaugh." Does this person have a website, or does he only exist in your fantasies?

I don't watch as much TV as most people (according to my friends) so I take it the media are focused on the nuclear reactor part of the disaster.
I find it hard to believe they are not also covering relief efforts after so far 12, 000 people have been declared dead or missing. If so that shows they are still of the ilk they were when I bid them goodnight. And I guess Fox is still all about anti-whatever-the-others-are-doing so I didn't miss much there.
I do, however, think people are concerned about radiation. What we can actually do about it I have no idea.

Correct...

Salty is trying to equate Rush's comments with the actual natural disaster, which is NOT what Rush is talking about...
