'Ill-informed and cruel': Growing number of GOP-led states move to end Covid unemployment benefits

Quote:
Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, ...said in a letter Friday that the federal unemployment measures "have accomplished their purposes." Employment in the state as of March was at 4.4 percent — down from a high of 10 percent in April 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Continuing these programs until the planned expiration date of September 4, 2021, is not necessary and actually interferes with the ability ...to fill ... vacancies...
Quote:
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, a Republican, announced last week that the state would end federal pandemic unemployment benefits for its residents next month, calling them a "dangerous federal entitlement."
Quote:
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, a Republican, said he has asked the state to complete a "demographic analysis of unemployed Hoosiers over the past 16 months" before he decides whether to continue to participate.

The unemployment rate in Indiana is 3.9 percent, which Holcomb said is "near pre-pandemic levels."
Did you know when Eisenhower took office unemployment was 2.6%? And that when he left it was 6.6%? Just fyi.

Quote:
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said Sunday ...that nothing in the data suggests that enhanced unemployment checks are the reason people are out of work. But, she added, "this is regional, and it's appropriate that governors in different regions would respond to what's going on in their regional labor market."
Quote:
A Yale study, for instance, found that expanding unemployment did not dissuade people from seeking work.
Yale where The Bush who saved our azz went to college.

Quote:
Judy Conti, government affairs director of the National Employment Law Project, a research and advocacy group, said ending the benefit is "ill-informed and cruel."

"I don't know why these governors thought you could just flip a switch and suddenly every business was going to get up and running and every worker back to a job," she said. "It's still going to take a while to get people back to work.
Quote:
"When you choke off money from the unemployed, you're only going to slow your recovery," she said.
Article also mentions that the Chamber of Commerce is pushing this. I haven't trusted them since they funded the North Florida branch of the KKK in the 60's.

The purpose the enhanced unemployment was to supplement unemployed workers while their businesses were shutdown due to government edict. In most states, those edicts have been lifted and businesses are open and operating again. The need for then enhanced benefits has ceased and those benefits need to be ended as it is now putting the Federal Gov in competition with small business for workers.

This is all be design. The government is paying people well over their basic wages NOT to work. This is forcing businesses to offer ever increasing wages as an incentive to get workers back to work. This works for some businesses, but others cannot afford such an increase and are closing their doors. While the benefits are nice, they are due to end this September, but those closed businesses will still be closed. THAT is when you will see the proverbial excrement hit the fan. The Federal gov is creating the next crises and is willing to print endless cash in an effort to move as many people as possible to government dependence.

Once again, your lack of understanding is quite clear on the topic of employment and it's current problems.

Just curious, you keep making various references to people and events that happened 50+ years ago. Perhaps that is where your disconnect is coming from. This is 2021, and the employment environment is different, people's mentalities are different, business are different.

By forcing businesses to continue raising wages as a lure to entice the government induced lack of workers, the inevitable pinning of the wage base at the desired $15 per hour will happen, and the flood of workers returning to the employment market will be eligible for the liberal desired FMW.

Hyperinflation will follow, and while prices skyrocket, additional businesses will close, and the cycle of government dependence will deepen.

Precisely. This is all part of their plan to increase the number of people dependent on government handouts and thereby cementing a large Democratic voting bloc. I am hopeful that there are enough honest people in this country that see it for what it is and reject these Marxists and their plans. We shall see.

This pandemic thing has been going on for over a year. These people should have already been employed elsewhere or returned to their jobs. Paying people more money than what they make working only encourages them to not go back to work. Because only a fucking moron would go back to work and make less money than what they are making by not working.

Are any of those democrats from the 1960s still on the Chamber of Commerce in Florida today? I ask because that was like what around 60 something years ago? Since you want to have distrust of a group for the alleged actions of its past members(I say alleged because books themselves are not reputable sources) then why are you a democrat considering their past support for slavery, segregation, Jim Crow, eugenics and other atrocities against people of color?

we must remember history or we are doomed to repeat it. the koch bros perpetrators of Americans for Prosperity, are pushing the same agenda their dad did with the john birch society. Purportedly anti communist, the dad delved into Nazism and racial prejudice during his business dealings with adolf hitler. The stains of prejudice go back forward and sideways, tendrils infiltrating many aspects of our lives. We hardly are aware how many ads, memes, books, films and news orgs are supported with their vast resources.
So yes 50 year old history is relevant today. Those with long agendas are hoping you forgot that history and it is evident their bet was a good one.

If the socialist idiots (redundant) keep their crap going in America, the only thing that's going to happen is a pack of government monkeys scrambling for safe haven.
