Default In honor of two fallen officers

Today, the city of Atlanta put to rest two of Atlanta Police's finest. Some of you may have heard about this, some of you may not have.

On November 3rd, 2012, the Atlanta police received a 911 call about a missing child. Whether the child had been abducted, had run away, or had wandered off was unknown. The Atlanta Police deployed their aviation unit to assist in the search for the 9 year old. As the helicopter was flying and checking a commercial area, the helicopter struck a power line and went down. Surrounded by hundreds of people in local restaurants, amazingly the helicopter managed to crash onto the road and not into any buildings. Though there were no civilian injuries, two officers lost their lives.

Officer Shawn Smiley(right) was a Navy Veteran who served a tour with the APD for two years. While in the Navy he was an aviation technician and had decided to have a more "grounded" and stable life for his family and elected to choose a career with the Atlanta Police.

Officer Richard Halford(left) was the pilot of the helicopter and had served a tour for 26 years with the Atlanta Police Department. He was an aviation pilot for over 16 years and leaves behind one daughter.

On a brighter side of the story, police had confirmed that the 9 year old had run away. He was found safely shortly after the crash. Today Officer Smiley had his funeral and I believe Halford's is tomorrow. Hundreds of police officers from multiple agencies (including my home agency and some of our post advisers) visited to pay respects.

Rest in peace Officer Smiley and Officer Halford

"A Blue Light"
Place a light in your window, make sure it is blue
Reminding friends, an officer gave a life for you
Give light to their remembrance, the color is sad
To family left by officers who knew them as Dad
It isnít the money, most definitely not the hours
They arenít comic book heroís with unnatural powers
Theyíre simply human beings who place life on the line
Place a blue light in your window, let their memory shine!
