Well, until we know what he actually posted I have no idea of what to make of this story.

I know that some on this forum believe that the police are always in the wrong until it is proven otherwise. Personally, having known a few LEO personally and knowing their character, I will give deference to the police until it is shown that they have abused their authority.

ok fine, but based on the story an info so far i do have a opinion.
the law it itself seems unconstitutional.
the action of the officers to criminally prosecute seems like a snowflake move. If the guy is lying on facebook why not just reply ON FACEBOOK with the truth?
the fact that they've decided to go this route seems heavy hand and not a good precedent to set.
Not knowing what the guy said at this point makes it even worse for every other citizen. Anyone with a legitimate complaint or a general gripe is chilled from expressing them selves for fear of a gov't funded criminal arrest and lawsuit against them.
What has the cop loss for get bad words said against him on facebook ... a bad reputation from the few people that take the words seriously.
The defendant gets arrested, (jail BEFORE the trial?) court fees, legal fees, time taken from work/life... as a start.

I'm sorry, i think that's something that is completely unamerican.
"Don't speak against the King" "Blasphemy against the Lor.. i mean police to the stock with ye knave!"
contrary to some folks belief i respect the police overall. but bad cops really piss me off. And i can't pretend NOT to see them.
I've praised good cops online and even in open court and have worked on the memorials of several cops killed in the line of duty in my area.
But I have FAR more respect and concern about the rights of the citizen.. who the police serve... than trying to polish the reputation of police so that no one ever think ill of them in general. .

In all cases people ... police or not... are innocent until proven guilty right?
in this case some folks are assuming, sight unseen, that the defendant is guilty of saying, something... just because the cops said so. "deference"
That's not quite fair either is it?

I'm sorry that any complaints about specific police... no matter how legit... upsets some folks noble view of police overall. But seems to me that they are human beings, subject to all the normal human follies. And with their heavy responsibility and granted authority they must be held accountable... as well as being respected for their work.

The 2 are not mutually exclusive.

That's the beauty of this country, everyone is free to express their opinions. Myself, I have seen too many stories where some of the facts were known and caused people to lean one way or the other about the story. But then when the entire story is revealed, they find that their initial stance was completely wrong.

I choose to withhold opinions on stories like this until the full picture of the event(s) in question is known.

I'm sorry you have such a negative view of law enforcement officers in this country. You must of had some bad experiences.

I too have had a couple of run ins with law enforcement officers in my past. But now that I am older, I look back at my actions and realize I probably had it coming. But that is me and I am not projected that on you or anyone else.

My experience since I have matured, is that if I keep my nose clean and behave like an adult, I have very few bad experiences with LEO's. The exception to that was a small town cop ticketing me in a speed trap where the road on the outside of town, was not clearly marked as having a lower speed limit and where I was caught speeding, appeared to be outside of the city limits by the lack of improvements one might expect to see inside of city limits.

So yeah, there are some bad cops out there, I have never said differently. And the case you are citing may very well end up showing that in this case. I will just wait until ALL of the facts are known before passing judgement.

By law he would have to have known what he said wasn't true. And that would have to be proved.
