Default Biscayne Park police chief gets 3 years in prison for framing black people

1st of all let me start with ...not all police are bad...
OK
seriously. their not. that's NOT what the story says, or what I'm saying.

In fact a GOOD Person/s Inside the Police Dept. anonymously got these "Bad Apple" police and the CHIEF caught.

I have to ask though, if 99% of the cops are by DEFAULT good across the board then why would police employee/s have to report this "anonymously"?
Is that a fair question?

Former Biscayne Park police chief gets 3 years in prison for framing black people
Raimundo Atesiano had faced maximum 10-year sentence

MIAMI - The former police chief of Biscayne Park will serve three years in prison for a conspiracy in his department to frame black people for crimes they did not commit.
A federal judge in Miami imposed the sentence Tuesday on ex-Biscayne Park Police Chief Raimundo Atesiano, who had faced a maximum 10-year sentence.
Three other former officers have pleaded guilty in the case, which centered around efforts by Atesiano to improve his department's crime-solving rate.
Atesiano's lawyer said the victims were not randomly selected but were known to police as having criminal pasts.
Prosecutors said the crimes for which black people were falsely arrested included burglaries and vehicle break-ins.
"The U.S. Attorney's Office is committed to holding those individuals accountable who abuse their positions of power to strip others of their civil rights," Fajardo Orshan, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, said in a news release. "Today, former police Chief Raimundo Atesiano stood before the court to answer for his crimes and the federal prison sentence that was imposed is one step toward justice for the victims and our South Florida community."
Former officers Charlie Dayoub and Raul Fernandez were each sentenced to a year in prison for their role in falsely arresting a 16-year old.
"I think he was really scared," Dayoub's attorney, Ana Davide, said. "I think he thought, because of the environment of that workplace, that if he didn't do it, he was going to fired."
Another former officer, Guillermo Ravelo, was sentenced to more than two years behind bars...

................
Former Chief Atesiano previously pleaded guilty to acting under color of law as chief of police when on three separate occasions he ordered former officers Guillermo Ravelo, Charlie Dayoub and Raul Fernandez to falsely arrest and charge individuals with unsolved burglaries. According to court filings, Chief Atesiano intentionally encouraged those officers to arrest individuals without a legal basis in order to have arrests effectuated for all reported burglaries. This created a fictitious 100% clearance rate for that category of crime.
“For his own professional benefit, Chief Atesiano corruptly and disgracefully abused his authority and the power of his office to create fictitious clearance statistics by falsely arresting individuals,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband. “This kind of abuse of power has no place in our nation and is contrary to American ideals, the rule of law, and fundamental fairness. The Department will continue to hold accountable officers who violate individual rights and betray the communities that they have been entrusted to serve and protect.”
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to holding those individuals accountable who abuse their positions of power to strip others of their civil rights,” stated U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan. “Today, former Police Chief Raimundo Atesiano stood before the court to answer for his crimes and the federal prison sentence that was imposed is one step toward justice for the victims and our South Florida community.” ....

What oversight does the police chief have?...It sounds like negligence on the part of the person(s) who "check & balance" this turd...

3 years isn't enough. What he did as police chief was despicable!

Yes, corrupt police officers should be rounded up and thrown in jail. I am in complete agreement with this notion.

Scum puppy. I hope he enjoys his time in jail, though 3 years is not long enough.

Whistle blower protection is a common practice designed to shield the accuser against the boss and to not publicize accusations. It doesn't indicate corruption of other employees for accusations to remain confidential until investigation is complete.

In this case it appears the system worked to punish the police chief for his illegal actions. So, there isn't a reason to imply a larger percentage of corrupt cops.

I have long felt that when officers or prosecutors knowingly frame someone (or withheld exculpatory evidence) for something they didn't do they should face at a minimum the same amount of time the person that was framed ended up serving.

That should be the BARE minimum and in most cases I would support many times that much.

FYI
From an old "law book",
If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse someone of a crime, the two people involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the Lord before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time. The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite, then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party. You must purge the evil from among you. The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you.
from Deuteronomy 19

So ya know I guess if we did try to create a similar punishment, someone would say we're creating a "theocracy".

They should have given the piece of garbage a blindfold, a cigarette, and a bullet to the back of the head.

I think the minimum should be double what the innocent person suffered.
