Default Judge wants to use “Alexa” as evidence in murder trial

JUSTIN CABRERA - November 28, 2018

Quote:
Alexa, can you solve this murder?

A New Hampshire judge overseeing a double murder trial has called on Amazon to release data from an Amazon Echo that was present during the crime. The judge is asking for partial records of the device, meaning that he is only seeking information that is relevant to the trial.
Quote:
Amazon itself considers the recordings to be customer information and is refusing to release the recordings “without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us.” This means that if the prosecution doesn’t obtain a warrant of some kind, Amazon will not willingly release the recordings. It should be noted that it’s possible that the Echo did not record anything about the murder, but we’ll never know for sure unless Amazon releases the information. More of this story
Wow I never considered the security or investigative features of this device.
My 90-year-old aunt and uncle have one. I'm still thinking about a robot vacuum.

Any gizmo that can take verbal commands, can record them. I'd rather not have some computer chip misunderstand my belching for a command to start the oven to broil or open the garage door. Misunderstand movie quotes as a reason to call 911.

No thank you.

If I ever have a piece of machinery running my house, I will check myself into the lunacy house.

I like Amazon's stance. Serve a warrant specifying what you want to hear. Stops fishing expeditions.

we are a surveilled society and people generally don't seem to care.
In Rhode Island, students and parents must let schools spy on them day and night through their laptops
...ACLU-RI raises the spectre of the Lower Merion School District, a story I broke in 2010, in which the wealthiest school district in America issued mandatory laptops to its students, then secretly operated their webcams to shoot thousands of covert photos of disfavored students -- in states of undress, asleep, awake, at home and at school....

FBI can spy on you through your webcam without triggering the indicator light... and has had the technology for several years
FBI has had secret webcam spying technology 'for several years'
Technique activates a webcam without turning on the recording light
The same malware has been used illegally by 'ratting' hackers

All the Ways Your Wi-Fi Router Can Spy on You
It can even be trained to read your lips.As people move through a space with a Wi-Fi signal, their bodies affect it, absorbing some waves and reflecting others in various directions. By analyzing the exact ways that a Wi-Fi signal is altered when a human moves through it, researchers can “see” what someone writes with their finger in the air, identify a particular person by the way that they walk, and even read a person’s lips with startling accuracy—in some cases even if a router isn’t in the same room as the person performing the actions.

Cell phones track and spy as well. and the FEDs are recording every phone call.
phones they can be turned on and operate as a open mics, for state local police or hackers private and corporate.
as well as phone info can be pulled from it by local cops . some have started to do this after they pull people over.

Many Smart TVs have recording devices.

game consoles have camera that record sound and video in the home, at the request of the owners or 3rd parties.

laptop and desktop computer have cameras and mics built into so you can "face chat" etc..
Both of those can be turn on and off remotely as well.

but hey nothing could go wrong,
it's all for our convenience and "safety" right? Some school even say they stopped some suicides becasue they've spied on children. "we love you big brother"

Gov't and Corps spying on us is nothing like your neighbor spying on you, that'd be wrong and creepy. -cough-

....Dropcam, which makes popular $199 cameras that capture audio and video for live streams to smartphones or for storage in the cloud, tells Fusion that it has received a "limited number of law enforcement requests"—search warrants—for video from its customers' cameras. The six-year-old company, which was purchased by Google-owned Nest Labs last year for more than $500 million, says it has only received these requests "in individual cases" and has not received "any broad-based government requests." In other words, when law enforcement has come to Dropcam, it has been for eyes into a single home at a time, not a whole neighborhood....
