The TSA is a waste of money that doesn't save lives and might actually cost them
Few post-9/11 security measures have proven as enduring as the creation of the Transportation Security Administration, which effectively nationalized airport security and dramatically increased screening procedures on flights. In a matter of months, flights went from something you could arrive 30 minutes to an hour beforehand and be fine to something you needed to budget two hours for, what with the shoe removal and the liquids and the possibility of a random pat-down.

It's annoying, but it's also worse than annoying. The TSA's inefficiency isn't just aggravating and unnecessary; by pushing people to drive instead of fly, it's actively dangerous and costing lives. Less invasive private scanning would be considerably better.
Why the TSA falls short

The TSA is hard to evaluate largely because it's attempting to solve a non-problem. Despite some very notable cases, airplane hijackings and bombings are quite rare. There aren't that many attempts, and there are even fewer successes. That makes it hard to judge if the TSA is working properly if no one tries to do a liquid-based attack, then we don't know if the 3-ounce liquid rule prevents such attacks.

So Homeland Security officials looking to evaluate the agency had a clever idea: They pretended to be terrorists, and tried to smuggle guns and bombs onto planes 70 different times. And 67 of those times, the Red Team succeeded. Their weapons and bombs were not confiscated, despite the TSA's lengthy screening process. That's a success rate of more than 95 percent....

Quite often, the government creates the problem, and then says 'see, you need us to solve the problem!'.

While 9-11 is very real, as you noted, the measures they are taking have proven inefficient. I have accidently taken on board an aircraft a cigarette lighter (multiple times) matches, a brass sgian-dubh, and a number of other no-no items.

I have also been subjected to an astounding number of 'random' pat down searches, likely in respect of my insulin pump and supplies.

I've had a similar experience. I have a multi-tool (pliers, knife, screw driver, etc.) that I had put into my laptop bag for a short trip a few years back. (That trip was by car). After the trip, I could not find the multi-tool and figured that I must have lost in on the trip.

A couple of years and a number of flights later, I was going through security in Cleveland and one of the TSA agents found that tool. It had slipped down to the bottom of a "pouch" in my bag and had worked it's way into a tight area. I had made at least 20 flights with that thing in my bag, but it wasn't until then that they found it.

The point is that if you really wanted to sneak something by the TSA, it is really not that difficult. It is pretty much just a show put on to make the public think they are safe.

A friend worked as an airport screener before the TSA was formed. As soon as it became a government job, his salary increased by 40% overnight for doing the same work! Talk about a taxpayer boondoggle! It is also intrusive, treating every airline passenger like a criminal, yet hasn't found one terrorist. Yes, the TSA is a waste of money.
