Post 34 criminal cases tossed after body cam footage shows cop planting drugs

Quote:
Maryland prosecutors have tossed 34 criminal cases and are re-examining dozens more in the aftermath of recent revelations that a Baltimore police officer accidentally recorded himself planting drugs in a trash-strewn alley.

Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said that, in all, 123 cases are under review in the wake of a scandal in which one officer has been suspended and two others put on administrative duty. Body cam footage revealed nearly two weeks ago showed one of the officers planting drugs when he didn't realize his body cam was recording. The Baltimore Police Department's body cams, like many across the nation, capture footage 30 seconds before an officer presses the record button. The footage was turned over to defense attorneys as part of a drug prosecution—and that's when the misdeed was uncovered.

"We are dismissing those cases which relied exclusively on the credibility of these officers," Mosby told a news conference Friday. She said the dismissed cases, some of which have already been prosecuted, involved weapons and drugs. Another dozen cases will stand because of "independent corroborative evidence," she said.

Evidence of body cam being put to good use.
They'll be able to not only expose bad cops, but also liar suspects who proclaim themselves as victims when they aren't. Cutting through a lot of gray area.

I think body cams and permanently on dashboard cams are a good idea. For both sides.

I'm concerned with some of the questionable police actions, but more concerned are doing their job and get wrongly called out.

Police Departments across the land are hard pressed in gaining quality new recruits to train as Police Officers.

Plus departments many have this military mind set. They all need much more mental testing in training and while on the job each year.. Just a thought..

Far to many strap on the badge and gun and it goes to their heads. Power corrupts...

And one has to consider who wants to be a police officer today. Most are war vets. And just maybe far to many get out of the military and have some P.T.S.D., which they hide. And which manifest several years later.

See the Military doesn't test for this problem and commanders are told not to point it out. So only if the returning soldier asks is he tested.

Agreed...

I doubt you'll ever see a report on the number of cases where the criminal lied and the cameras proved them wrong...The cameras will help/hurt both sides, but the media will only focus on the one side...
