Springs Officers Will No Longer Take Fitness Tests After Discrimination Lawsuit

Quote:
I think its wrong.

Colorado Springs residents had a lot to say after hearing that Colorado Springs police officers will no longer have to take physical fitness tests this year.

I think its a mistake, Mary Jo Piccin told CBS4s Tom Mustin. I think the police need to be able to chase down them criminals.

Last Friday the Colorado Springs Police Department agreed to the demands of 12 female officers who filed a civil suit claiming the fitness tests are discriminatory. All the officers were over the age of 40.

The suit will now move to a federal court. Police Chief Pete Carey says hes disappointed, but will abide by the judges decision.

I very firmly stand behind physical fitness tests for our officers. I think what Im asking them to do is fair and my hope is a federal judge also agrees with this, Carey said.

The police test consists of two running exams. Officers also have to do 52 push-ups in 2 minutes, and 45 sit-ups, also in 2 minutes.

The female officers who filed suit had been moved to desk duty after failing the test.

Many residents agreed with the chief, saying the requirements of the job demand fitness.

I remember years ago when there were no fitness standards, and they had some pretty hefty officers male and female, said Piccin.

I remember when Women wanted to join the Fire service. "Come on in" we said.
Most were willing to meet the same standards as the guys and we were all for it. Then the Police and Fire Board made special accommodations.

I had to carry a 185Lb Man out a 2nd floor window, MINIMUM! She had to carry 125Lbs. She was the only one on the force who weighed 125 Lbs.

Here's the thing, I do not recall any 125 Lb man EVER making the grade. There was a reason and it wasn't his gender.

A 1&1/2" fire hose will lift a 125Lb person off the ground.

Bullsh!t

Same issues go for policeman.

That's the REAL issue here...

It isn't discrimination...It's about being ABLE to do the job...

I have always held two fundamental beliefs when it comes to health and fitness in the Military and Public Safety

1) The standards should always be the same. Whether you are a male or female, white or black, Jew or Gentile; you should meet and exceed any physical requirements to be deemed fit for service to enter into training

2) Fitness and health needs to be maintained. Its amazing how many out of shape police and fire officials I see. And I don't mean just "a little flabby", I mean I honestly wonder how they even do their jobs. My local departments (the Fire, PD, and Sheriff) not only require a fitness evaluation every six months and a full physical every year, but they apply it to all sworn officials. That includes the PD Chief, the Fire Chief, and the Sheriff himself. Hell I commend the Sheriff in particular. If you fail the fitness test you have x amount of time to retake it and must check in with their health and wellness official (diet/fitness plan creation). He failed it and stuck by his policy-he worked out with the other deputies who failed, stuck to the diet plan, and passed the second time.

Other departments around us..not so much. Again, I wonder how they do their jobs. I do not understand why you have to be in the best shape of your life to enter the brotherhood...but are allowed to waste all of that away once you have been in. If you can't physically meet the job you either need to quit or stay on desk duty.

If you could see some of the Detroit Cops and Firepersons who are female you would see why they could never past a fitness test. But hey at least we have diversity.

Separate group, but relevant to the OP point ...

Firefighter who flunked physical injured 10 days into job | New York Post
A firefighter who was allowed to graduate the Fire Academy despite failing physical tests has already gone out on medical leave — just 10 days into the job, The Post has learned.

Probationary firefighter Choeurlyne Doirin-Holder injured herself Monday while conducting a routine check of equipment at Queens’ Engine 308 in South Richmond Hill. Getting off the truck, Doirin-Holder missed a step and landed on her left foot, suffering a fracture, sources said.

It was her second shift after a transfer from Engine 301. In training for a hazmat assignment, officers found her struggling to perform the required tasks.

Firefighters called the tripping incident embarrassing — and alarming.

“If you’re going to get hurt in the firehouse checking a rig, what would happen at a fire?” an insider asked.
Physical standards.
They're typically there for a reason...
