Wow.
So you have no problems, if no ID is given, that a molester gets a job in a daycare center, or an embezzeler works at a bank, or.... or....

ID is not only used for e-verify, it's used for background checks, to make sure that person being hired for a position is suitable for that position. It also makes sure that when they are entered into payroll, that their SS number is correct, so they get credited for monies paid via taxes.

I am astounded at this post, salty. This is way under your normal level.

Maybe you and some others have forgotten the time we did not have to do this to get a job at Waffle House or Bert's Plumbing.
People were outraged for one thing that our personal social security number was broadcast all over the planet. Social Security was never intended as an id, and is kinda stupid to use as one. No photo just a card.
But yes too many of our privacies have been invaded.
As for child molesters, they should report and if they have a job that involves children be sent back to jail.
Showing id for work does nothing, nothing, nothing to protect us from invasion by illegal workers. And that is what the law is. A deterent to illegals. It did not work.
In fact until the recession there was a bigger tide flowing from the boarder than when the id laws were first implemented. It is time to abolish it altogether.

That is not to say you shouldn't show it when you register to vote. Or when an employer requires it. Run a dr lic for felonies and what not if you hire someone for banking or casino work. But SS card? It is my work history information, it is my business. It can too easily fall into the wrong hands and to require that my employer see it (much less make a copy of it) to get a job is clearly a violation of my right to privacy.

It's no one's business if I've ever been arrested just if I can do the work. Now if it is a high risk security job like guarding money I can see that sure. But not for waitressing or digging a pipeline or being a secretary or store clerk.
It doesn't help, mlurp in my estimaton for anything. Has it stopped the flow of illegals since it went into effect 30 years ago?
The fines are a joke. Every time we started blabing about illegals they crack down a little here and there but the really abusive places cry through their lobbyists (to state houses as well as federal) to keep the farmer and warehouse going they have to have slave wages.
Well they are wrong!

2 Things I see which are very wrong with the above. It is important for an employer to know if any worker was arrested or any other thing which in the future could become a problem, like a new position etc.

And if all were firing on all cylinders, that is working together the illegals would not be as bad a problem as it has become.

Not having slave wages didn't hurt them in the 70s a time of prosperity and they did great. They are a bunch of greedy bustards owning these mega multi mergered enterprises now and the state and national government should tell them if they can't make a profit without slave wages they should break up into smaller farms and warehouses and they would do better.
There's an old saying comes from Missouri "If I can't make it on 160 acres I'll sell half."
Think about that one while you're sitting in your bubble bath!

Advancements are made and you want to use the older methods in the most important area, and I thought the left wanted to go forward. Gee now I have to rethink this.

second point the id law went into affect to stop illegals, but there are more than ever. it is time to end our invasion of privacy.

It was not an advancement it was a way to get a national id like the republican party has wanted for ever. TO SELL YOU sh*t. They are used more for selling lists than any illegal blockage.

No, I haven't forgotten.
SS# and drivers licenses have become the source of all information. It is actually not necessary to give a copy of your SS card to an employer, but it is the employer's responsibility to 1. Make sure your SS# is correct for previously stated tax reasons and 2. Maintain 2 forms of ID, one including a picture ID, so that if the DOL, state or federal, comes to visit, you can prove who works for you.
Since the SS card can resolve 2 of those issues, most people provide it. Passports, other federal documents can be copied in lieu of it.

I've been through 2 federal DOL audits. We apparently had several illegal RUSSIAN employees, and it cost us plenty in terms of money, man hours for the audit, and embassment.

Apparently, you don't have that great a concern for your privacy, if you support the Insurance Mandate. It allows the government access to your records.

If you are actually hired then you can give your social security number to the book keeper.
I reiterate the current law and fines is for the purpose of catching illegals. Most are savvy to false documentation sources. And it has over all not worked. Look at the amount of illegals just since the law went into affect. If an employer requires a background check for some reason that is up to him/her.
Most documentation in this country should be voluntary if at all. Police and safety issues are different. I don't think you need to know anything except my references if you are hiring me for any number of non security low risk tasks.
If a person got caught stealing is one thing. Those who are so good at it they never got caught---how do you determine who they are? You see you just have to be a good judge of character and vigilant on testing these people to see if they would steal. There are several methods quite easy to apply to check their character.

As far as credit worthiness, if you are hiring for a bank or other high risk/ high potential for theft organization, that is your prerogative as an employer to ask for more information.
"Show your papers please" should not be as integral part of the American system as it has sadly become.

Who put this law into affect to catch illegals? I could swear I saw you mention that a few years ago. It did not work. That is what the law is for. Just because some people find it handy to make you think it's ok to dig into your past now that you are used to it doesn't make it right.

**And a note to GG--I was thinking about your first reply last night and no I do not think SS is a way Obama Care should go to identify participants. They could take your health policy number and check it with the insurance company. That way less people have access to your information

No where that I am aware of requires your SS card prior to hiring. All background checks are done after hiring, so your concern holds no water.

I wasn't refering to the SS card in the Inurance Mandate. I was refering to your comment about invasion of privacy. I don't know about you, but I have an issue with the government being able to see my medical records, without my knowledge or for any purpose other than highly infectious diseases. That is a true violation of privacy, not just a perceived one.

It's none of their business, and pretty much violates the HIPPA law.

These pass few years Obama did and ICE has captured more illegals than any Republican has year to year. Of the many they got a lot of true gang related criminals off our streets if you count the FBI follow ups from some of the crimes.

What didn't work once now works except for votes this has been cut back to only crimes that the FBI & ICE follow up on. And do count our Customs & Boarder Patrol who gets the most.

Sense then they now use Military products to beat the Cartels. Which is very good. As the cartels change up a lot.

In AZ., they now use cantaloupes & large compressed air cannons to shoot the 20 Kilo's over the fence.
