![]() When I say "don't get me started" what I actually mean is if you get me started you will never hear the end of it. There is plenty wrong with our society here! People overseas sometimes have a rose-coloured image of England, and yes some places are like the assumptions others have, but a lot aren't. But of course that is a topic for elsewhere.

There is a nasty tendency for Statists to confuse the two deliberately. Properly, government is only an aspect of Society. In a free country, it should be a minor aspect of the society.

Whereas some other more civilised countries are comfortably secure, we chop and change policies in education and health trying to put back the Great into Great Britain, but it won't happen. Our last Labour Government ousted 2 years ago this coming June left our country with terrible debt so the current coalition is juggling the budget, but it is the poor that is suffering with cuts in the basic services, not to mention other cuts in Public spending. And now we have the highest unemployment in seventeen years. We hardly came out of the last recession and we are back into another. Society has broken down. I suppose you know about the riots we had in London - people have no morals and no shame. Not all people obviously, but there is a "I want so I will take" culture with the more so-called 'impoverished people.' Impoverished my 'arris' - they spend their handouts money on stuff I would love - buy I am savvy with my earnings. One in four households here are in what is known as 'fuel poverty' which means ten percent or more of the household's total income is spent on heating and hot water. The elderly in our hospitals are hungry and dehydrated - nurses are too busy to sit by the patient's bedside and feed them. The country is a mess, and with our riots last summer, yob culture, etc., and other stuff, it makes it a difficult place to be happy to live in. However of course there are worse places!

You've just gone further with the Socialist experiment than we have yet. But give us time. Three years ago we elected a man with a resume insufficient to be hired to manage a bait shop, and we may elect him again. Your problem in Britain may be the same fundamental one that I see here. That is, generations ago a very bad decision was made to have almost all of the lower level schools run by the State. (We risk confusion here, because the term “Public Schools” has opposite meanings in Britain and America.) Schools run by the government – any government, have an automatic imperative to produce compliant adults with views and opinions that will not unduly trouble the ruling elite. The execution of that imperative need not even be conscious. Thousands of small policy and curriculum choices over decades, the majority only slightly influenced by a desire that the young should think as the elders controlling their education wish, will have the result we see now. That is young adults with a fictitious understanding of their nation’s history, a grotesquely distorted view of Human nature, and hostility towards the religions that influenced the development of their cultures, and so stand in judgment of it. People with a false understanding of themselves and their neighbors, their country and how it came to be are very easy to manipulate. Their minds are forts made of cobwebs and tissue paper. Patriots are undesired, since they will be vociferously critical of the ethical failings of the elite. Thus, patriotism must be opposed by state run education. In its place, narcissism will do nicely, since people consumed with themselves tend to be susceptible to bribery, the Dole in Britain, public Assistance in America, and “free” health care in both countries. The recipe for this is a curriculum that stresses “self-esteem,” which has taken such cancerous root here. Note that “self-respect” is rarely mentioned in modern educational dogma. Self-respect places too many demands on and subjugates self-esteem, and so is ultimately hostile to the State, which suppresses it though its ever greater ownership of the young. Unless the great republics – the people, not their governments rebel and take charge, and very soon, of the education of their children, I don’t see how free nations can remain that way for many more years.
