Gov. Quinn signs internet tax law, businesses vow to leave

Quote:
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- In a move some predict will cause a mass exodus of jobs from Illinois, Gov. Pat Quinn signed off on a bill that asks internet retailers to collect sales tax on customers' purchases.

The measure was approved by the previous General Assembly in the final days of the lame duck session. Quinn's deadline to act on the legislation -- nicknamed the "Amazon tax" -- was drawing near.

The governor's main reason for signing it was that "Amazon was the one being unfair," according to a statement.

In advance of signing, the governor met with a group of affiliate marketers who urged him not to sign. Theyasked Illinois to wait for federal legislation to level the internet sales tax playing field. Sen. Dick Durbin is sponsoring the federal effort.

The affiliate marketers have vowed to relocate their industry upon Quinn's signature.

The bill is HB3659.
