I've served on two juries while working the night shift 4:00 PM till 2:30 AM. They would let me off work at midnight but paid till 2:30 AM. I had to get back up at 6:00 AM and drive 30 miles to the courthouse...

it's been a long time since I've been summoned or served, and I have been a registered voter for the last 30+ years.

Didn't enjoy it, but felt is was part of my duties as a citizen of this nation. Not everything is fun to do, but doing what we must is what comes with the territory.

I've been on a jury twice, once as an alternate, and once as a regular juror. Both cases were one day trials.

It was interesting.

Why, oh why do I try to make jokes?

Yes. You were clear. I thought, obviously in a case of self delusion, that I was being funny.

If anyone wants me, I'll be in my cave being fitted for a sackcloth garment.

After that insight, I just started putting them in the shredder. Never had a problem or got so much as a phone call.

FWIW: The two times I got voir dire'd, my name was crossed off as soon as they discovered I had 2 cousins who worked for the PD, one cousin with the US Marshals Service, and was dating an attorney ... just sayin' ...
OK, that is not a bad idea. I might try that next time...

There was another thread about jury duty in which I stated that until judges start treating jurors with respect I will refuse to go.

And, please, don't call it a civic duty when in actuality it is forced upon you by the threat of a fine and imprisonment.

But I still wish they'd find another method for the very reason mentioned.
Like using the census, taxpayers or at least a driver license list. I thought once a sentence was served a person paid their debt to society.

I understand what you are saying, but I was raised with the idea that as I would want my peers to hear my case, I should make myself available to hear someone else's.

Unfortunately, just as with taxes, if there weren't penalties and fines, no one would do it.

That being said, I think they should have people who volunteer to do it, retirees and such. We do have a whole pool of unemployed people available now.....
