October 23, 2012 12:49 PM

A 17-year-old Alabama girl has been indicted on murder charges after police say she stabbed to death another girl, 14, in March. According to authorities, a group of approximately 20 teens were having a party at a house with no parents present when a fight broke out between four girls. The fight worked its way into the kitchen where police say Autumn Wood grabbed a knife and stabbed Brooklyn Hollins, who died at the scene.

UPDATE: Monday, October 29, 2012. Posted 29 Oct.

A preliminary hearing scheduled for two suspects in the death of a Tabor College football player has once again been continued.

Recent string of homicides strains police, D.A.'s office

D.A.: 'We only have so many resources'

Posted: October 28, 2012 - 2:37pm

By Ann Marie Bush

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

Topeka’s three homicides within three days recorded this month not only shocked the city, it also impacted the Topeka Police Department and the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office.

“We only have so many resources,” District Attorney Chad Taylor said of his office.

Seven of the city’s 10 homicides happened between Sept. 8 and Oct. 18. Three happened within a three-day stretch beginning Oct. 16.

Topeka police Capt. Jerry Stanley said he can’t remember the city having had three homicides in such a short amount of time.

“This was an all-hands-on situation,” he said.

The police department has 33 detectives on staff.

“In situations like these, we pull them all in,” Stanley said. “We task every one of our detectives with something.”

The first 24 to 48 hours after a homicide is the most crucial time for police officers. This time is spent gathering intelligence through computer technology and canvassing neighborhoods.

The Topeka Police Department utilizes an incident command system where one person — such as a commander, lieutenant or captain — is put in charge and coordinates the department’s resources.

Everyone meets every three to four hours within that first crucial time frame for briefings.

The first of the three slayings was Ahmad Mondaine, 22, of Topeka, who was found Oct. 16 with critical gunshot wounds inside a car parked at the Camelot Village Apartments, 5307 S.W. West Drive. He later died at a local hospital.

Police haven’t announced any arrests in the case.

Topeka police Capt. Jerry Stanley said the case is proving “challenging” because witnesses are uncooperative.

The second slaying — which happened within 80 minutes of Mondaine’s shooting — was Hugo Jimenez Sr., 75, of Topeka, who was found dead of gunshot wounds in front of Autobuses Los Paisanos, 200 S.E. 3rd.

Police arrested Jesus Daniel Valadez-Soto, 22, of Topeka, a day later in connection with the crime. Prosecutors charged Valadez-Soto with premeditated first-degree murder.

Valadez-Soto remains in the Shawnee County Jail in lieu of a $1 million cash or surety bond. His preliminary hearing has been set for 11 a.m. Nov. 19.

Even after an arrest is made, the work doesn’t stop for the police department’s officers or the district attorney’s staff, Stanley said.

The third was the death of Ashley Alcala, 34, who Topeka police found at 7:20 a.m. Oct. 18 in her residence in the 3000 block of S.E. Kentucky. She was taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have arrested and charged four people in connection with the slaying.

Alcala’s husband, Manuel Alcala, 32; along with her mother-in-law, Manuela Alcala, 57, of El Paso, Texas; her brother-in-law Gabino Campos Alcala, 19, of El Paso, Texas; and Benjamin Anaya, 19, of El Paso, Texas, have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder.

Manuel Alcala and Gabino Alcala are brothers.

“I’m proud of how this case progressed,” Stanley said. “We were able to bring four suspects into custody.”

Several departments assisted with the case, he said, including the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the El Paso Police Department, the Kansas Turnpike Authority and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Taylor said cases involving co-defendants — especially where there are multiple family members — take a lot of time and resources.

“Co-defendant cases are very complicated,” he said.

Woman Attacked By Naked Intruder In Her Home

A 29-year-old man is in jail after police say he broke into a Wichita home and sexually assaulted a woman. It happened just before 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of South Lulu Street.

Police say the victim walked into her home and found a man she did not know naked in her bedroom. He tackled her when she tried to get away and performed a sex act while holding her down. The woman was later able to escape and call police.

Officers arrived and set up a perimeter around the scene while they worked to communicate with the man who refused to leave the home. After a brief standoff, police were able to enter the home where they found the naked man and arrested him.

The suspect was booked into jail on charges of aggravated kidnapping, burglary and sexual battery.

Illinois mom stabs son 100 times, girl 50 times

Woman was angry at husband, prosecutor says

Posted: November 1, 2012 - 10:26am

By The Associated Press

WHEATON, Ill. — A suburban Chicago woman stabbed her 7-year-old son 100 times because she was angry with her husband, and a 5-year-old girl about 50 times because she witnessed the attack, as both children prayed and begged for their lives, prosecutors said Thursday.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said Elzbieta Plackowska, 40, told investigators several stories, at first blaming the attack on a stalker who got into her home in Naperville, 25 miles west of Chicago. She later said the children had evil inside of them and she was fighting the devil in the house, Berlin said at a bond hearing.

Plackowska eventually admitted she was angry with her husband, who works as a truck driver and is often gone, because he left her alone to care for her son, Justin, and work as a maid, which she felt was beneath her, Berlin said.

“She told the detectives that she thought by killing Justin she would make her husband hurt the way she hurt in their relationship,” Berlin said.

Plackowska told investigators she found the children jumping on the bed and then attacked them, also slitting their throats, Berlin said.

“She had grabbed a knife and she made both victims kneel and begin praying. She began stabbing her son Justin and told him he was going to heaven tonight. He pleaded for his life and told her to stop. But she continued stabbing him until he was dead,” he said.

“She then turned her attention to 5-year-old Olivia and began stabbing her with the knife multiple times. She as well pleaded for her life, but the defendant continued to stab her until she was deceased.”

Plackowska killed the girl, Olivia Dworakowski, because the child had witnessed the attack on her son, Berlin said.

DuPage County Judge John Kinsella ordered Plackowska held without bond. Plackowska didn’t speak during the hearing other than to indicate she couldn’t afford an attorney. The judge appointed a public defender.

Topeka man arrested in attempted 2nd degree murder

Posted: November 5, 2012 - 12:31pm

By The Capital-Journal

A 28-year-old Topeka man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted second degree murder, according to the Shawnee County Jail log.

Brian William Bell was booked into the jail at 11:23 p.m. Sunday in connection with four felonies and a misdemeanor: Attempted second degree intentional murder, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, felony obstruction and criminal use of weapons.

Although the jail logs indicate, citing a corresponding Kansas statute, that the first charge was second degree murder, a representative at the jail confirmed the victim is still alive.

Topeka police Sgt. Shane Lind said he was provided only limited information about the case, which, he said, is still under investigation.

“It was somebody trying to do something and it wasn’t successful,” Lind said. “No body was hurt or injured.”

Other police representatives couldn’t immediately be reached for further details.

Lee McGowan, chief of staff for the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office, said Monday he couldn’t comment.

Law enforcement officers have arrested a California man on suspicion of robbing a Jamestown, Kan., bank four years ago, according to a release from the office of U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom.

.Custody dispute eyed in deaths of 5 in Ohio

By JOHN SEEWER | Associated Press – 8 hrs ago.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — When firefighters used a sledgehammer to force open the door to a garage which had been barricaded shut, they found five people, two dogs and a cat inside. All were dead of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police believe the three children, their uncle, and their grandmother died Monday in a possible murder-suicide amid a custody dispute. A truck was running with hoses leading from the exhaust into a car in the family's garage.

They were identified as 54-year-old Sandy Ford; her 32-year-old son, Andy Ford; and her grandchildren, 10-year-old Paige Hayes, 6-year-old Logan Hayes and 5-year-old Madalyn Hayes.

The victims lived with Sandy Ford's husband, Randy, in a house located in a residential neighborhood close to the Michigan state line.

Randy Ford called police Monday afternoon to say that he had returned home and found suspicious notes in the house from his wife, son and grandkids. He said he wasn't able to enter the garage.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan said Sandy Ford had primarily taken care of the children at her residence for the last four years, but their parents — the Fords' daughter, Mandy Hayes, and the children's father, Chris Hayes, were trying to regain full custody of them. He said Sandy Ford was upset about that, and he believes that was the motive for the murder-suicide.

Topekan sentenced for shooting at home with child inside

Joshua Adams will serve 12 months for drive-by shooting

...................... November 15, 2012 - 3:09pm. Posted 16 Nov ......................

By The Capital-Journal

A 19-year-old Topekan was sentenced Thursday to 18 months in jail after a jury convicted him Oct. 18 in connection with a drive-by shooting.

Shawnee County District Court Judge Mark Braun sentenced Joshua Thomas Adams to 18 months for criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling and criminal damage to property.

Braun imposed a 12-month sentence for criminal discharge of a firearm and a six-month sentence for the criminal damage charge. The judge ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.

At 1:38 a.m. Sept. 4, 2011, Adams was in a vehicle that drove by the victim’s residence and fired multiple shots into the house and a parked car in the driveway of the residence, authorities said.

There were four people inside the residence at the time of the shooting, including an 18-month-old child, the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

District Attorney Chad Taylor expressed appreciation to the victim’s family for their cooperation throughout the prosecution of the case. He also credited the Topeka Police Department for its “thorough and professional investigation of this matter.”

Jessica Domme, assistant district attorney, handled the prosecution.

Preliminary hearing scheduled for Manuela Alcala

Woman charged in death of her daughter-in-law

...................... November 15, 2012 - 3:01pm. Posted 16 Nov.......................

Crews responded to the Alcala home at 7:20 a.m. on a report of an assault. Ashley Alcala was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, where she later died.

Manuela Alcala didn’t have to appear in Shawnee County District Court for Thursday’s proceedings. Her attorney, Julia Spainhour, appeared before District Judge Cheryl Kingfisher. Kingfisher handled Judge Evelyn Wilson’s 1:30 p.m. docket.

Chief deputy district attorney Jacqie Spradling is prosecuting the case.

Manuela Alcala is one of four people charged in Ashley Alcala’s death. The others are Ashley’s husband, Manuel Alcala, 32; her brother-in-law Gabino Campos Alcala, 19, of El Paso; and Benjamin Anaya, 19, also of El Paso. All have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder.

Gabino Alcala and Manuel “Manny” Alcala are brothers.

Spradling also is prosecuting Manuel Alcala. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 27.

Gabino Alcala and Anaya have refused to waive extradition from El Paso, Texas, to Shawnee County.

“Both defendants are still being held on our fugitive warrants,” Spradling said. “We are obtaining the governor’s warrants for both, which have not been completed.”

Also on Thursday, a hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. for former basketball standout Lasharra Lynn Riley, 22, was rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 20.

Riley is a former Washburn Rural High School all-state basketball player who transferred to UMKC after playing one season at Oklahoma State.

She has been charged with one count of aggravated battery (knowingly causing great bodily harm) and attempted aggravated robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon. Both are felonies.

According to court documents, Riley allegedly caused great bodily harm or disfigurement to Kyle G. Kuhn on or about July 17 in Shawnee County. The records also allege Riley was armed with a gun and tried to take drugs from Kuhn.

Riley, who is represented by Topeka attorney Thomas Lemon, will have to appear in court because she was released on a $10,000 bond Tuesday.
