Male student, 16, threatened to shoot classmate at Topeka school

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

A 16-year-old male student at Capital City School in Topeka was taken into custody Wednesday morning after a campus police officer found him to be in possession of a handgun, authorities said.

The student, who already was on probation, was reported to have been taken to the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections in connection with the incident, which involved having a gun at school and threatening a classmate.

Ron Harbaugh, Topeka Unified School District 501 spokesman, said that before the student was apprehended, he had threatened to shoot another student at the school, located at 500 S.W. Tuffy Kellogg Drive.

Harbaugh said a campus police officer acted quickly, apprehending, then “patting down,” the student.

At that point, it was found the student had a .25-caliber automatic handgun in his pocket.

“He didn’t take the gun out of his pocket,” Harbaugh said of the student. “At no time did he point it at anyone.”

Harbaugh credited the campus police officer’s “quick response” in helping to diffuse the situation.

No injuries were reported.

Capital City School, operated by USD 501, is an alternative school for students in sixth through 12th grades. It is located just east of Hummer Sports Park.

Not much in the way of a news story for a killing and a arrested suspect.

Officer Chuck Huen faces surgery after being shot in standoff

Posted: October 1, 2012 - 1:59pm

By The Associated Press

SALINA — A Salina police officer who was shot during a standoff last week lost sight in one eye.

Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said officer Chuck Huen faces additional surgeries after being shot in the right eye during the standoff.

Mansfield said the standoff began after officers responded to a report of a possible stolen car and/or domestic incident late Thursday. When they went into the home, they exchanged gunfire with 19-year old Marijon Gadson.

Officers retreated, and Gadson later was found dead in the basement. Mansfield said Gadson likely was dead for much of the six-hour standoff, and it is likely he committed suicide.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

Robbery suspect, 31, in custody after shootout

Suspect in armed holdup fled from Kansas Highway Patrol trooper

THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL

A man released from prison in 2011 after serving seven years for armed robbery was taken into custody Tuesday night in Saline County after a bank heist, vehicle chase and shootout with a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

The man, identified as Jason Gleason, 31, was apprehended late Tuesday following an exchange of gunfire with a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper in Saline County.

Three people were reported injured during the exchange of gunfire, including the trooper, who suffered cuts from flying glass when the window of his car was struck by bullets.

Two people in the suspect’s vehicle also were reported injured, though it wasn’t immediately known if anyone had been hit by any of the rounds that were fired by the trooper.

Authorities said the arrest followed the Tuesday morning robbery of a bank in Chase, a town of 450 people located just west of Lyons in Rice County.

On Tuesday evening, authorities said, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper in Saline County located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect car involved in the armed robbery.

The driver of the vehicle refused to stop for the trooper, resulting in a chase that started at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday on K-4 highway from Ohio Street, south of Salina, and ended near Assaria Road, south of Gypsum, where the fleeing vehicle crashed.

When the vehicle crashed, gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and the trooper. The suspect then fled from the scene on foot.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies searched the area for the suspect. The Patrol activated aircraft, K-9 units, its Special Response Team and ground units in the search.

Authorities said Gleason was taken into custody later Tuesday night without further incident.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the exchange of gunfire as a matter of policy with an agency-involved shooting.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, meanwhile, is the lead agency on the bank robbery investigation.

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Gleason, who stands 6-5 and weights 196 pounds, was convicted in 2004 in connection with aggravated robbery in Reno County. He was paroled from the Kansas Department of Corrections in 2011, then arrested again in February of this year for a parole violation.

He was incarcerated from February until June, when he was paroled.

Police Arrest Two Men In Robbery, Beating Of Disabled Woman

Monday, September 24, 2012.. Posted 17 Oct.

Wichita Police have arrested two men for allegedly assaulting and robbing a woman of her disability money.

The men are 40 and 45-years-old, respectively. They face charges of robbery and battery.

Sunday, September 23, 2012. Posted 17 Oct. 2012...

Wichita police are searching for a man they say assaulted a woman and then robbed her of her disability money. It happened just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a hotel in the 6100 block of West Kellogg.

The 36-year-old woman told police she asked a friend to drive her to a local grocery store to cash a $2,000 disability check. The man and a friend the woman didn't know picked her up at the hotel, took her to cash the check and then drove her back to the hotel.

Police say the woman's friend went with her into her room where he punched her twice in the face and took her purse that contained the money. Both men then left the scene. The woman was not severely hurt.

Investigators say the victim was able to give them the name of the suspect and they have leads on the identity of the second man. The suspect is described as a bald white man who is 6-foot tall and weighs 225 pounds. He has tattoos on both his arms and his neck.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the police.

Three Former Prisoners Charged In Valley Center Bank Robbery

UPDATE: Friday, October 19, 2012

Four people have been charged with robbing a Valley Center bank, the U.S. Attorney's office announced today.

Henry Adams III, Terry Revels, Veronica Johnson, all of Wichita, and Dlaney Nixon of Valley Center are charged with robbing the Intrust Bank, 142 N. Ash.

An agent’s affidavit alleged Nixon and Revels entered the bank wearing ski masks and hoodies and carrying black bags. Johnson allegedly waited outside in a white Cadillac to act as a lookout. One of them yelled for the tellers to “get down, get down.” He pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at the tellers. The tellers complied and lay down on the floor. The robbers vaulted the counter and emptied the teller drawers of cash before fleeing the bank.

Officers located the white Cadillac near 81st North and West Street in Valley Center and chased the car for several miles before it stopped on Sheridan Court and the three male robbers ran in different directions.

Nixon was arrested after a foot chase.

Officers lost track of Revels and conducted a sweep of the neighborhood until a homeowner contacted them. The homeowner said one of the robbers had broken into his house and tied up his 15-year-old son, stolen his cell phone and threatened to hurt him. The homeowner left work and returned to his house, Revels fled the house. Officers found Revels hiding in a pickup near 623 West Main and arrested him.

Adams and Johnson were arrested after officers stopped a blue Infinity near where the robbers abandoned the Cadillac.

If convicted, they each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on the bank robbery charge.

Kansas corrections records show Nixon was released from custody last month after serving time for theft, burglary and forgery. Revels was released on September 21, after service time for aggravated robbery. Adams was discharged September 7th. He served time for theft and forgery.

No one was hurt in the robbery.

Officers say they've captured the fourth and final person in connection to the robbery of a Valley Center bank.

At about 12:15 p.m., the INTRUST Bank at 142 N. Ash in Valley Center was robbed. According to Valley Center Police, two men entered the bank, told everyone to lie down and took an undisclosed amount of money.

Minutes later, police found a vehicle stopped near 81st St. N. and West St. The three people who were in the car got out and began running, but were all captured.

Officers from multiple agencies set up a perimeter to begin looking for a fourth person, and found him shortly after 3 p.m laying down behind a house.

All Valley Center schools were placed on lockdown, although there was no school due to a district in-service day. All practices are on hold. Coaches will get messages to players to let them know when practices will take place

.Missing Ore. woman's body found, man arrested

Associated Press – 13 hrs ago. Posted 20 Oct. 2012 .......

GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) — Searchers found the body of a young Oregon woman who vanished this week on her way to work and a neighbor has been arrested, Gresham police said late Friday night.

The body of Whitney Heichel, 21, was found on Larch Mountain, a remote, forested area east of Gresham, Police Chief Craig Junginger told a news conference.

After collecting DNA and fingerprints and conducting three interviews over three days, police arrested Jonathan Holt, 24, of Gresham, for investigation of aggravated murder, the chief said.

Holt lived in the same apartment complex as Heichel and her husband.

The Starbucks barista reportedly left her apartment for work at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on a drive that typically takes less than five minutes.

Her husband, Clint, called police roughly three hours later. He told investigators he tried to reach Whitney multiple times after her boss alerted him that she never arrived for her 7 a.m. shift.

Police said Heichel's ATM card was used at a nearby Troutdale gas station at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday. Two hours later, her sport utility vehicle was found in a Wal-Mart parking lot with the passenger side window smashed.

A child later found her cell phone in a field that lies between the gas station and the Wal-Mart, giving investigators another venue to search.

Dad, 4-year-old killed in Calif. shooting; 3 hurt

Associated Press – 51 mins ago.. 20 Oct. 2012 ........

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — A father and his 4-year-old son were killed and a woman and two other young children were wounded by a gunman wearing a painter's mask who set fire to their home near Los Angeles early Saturday, authorities said.

Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta told KABC-TV that a SWAT team set up a perimeter and was using dogs to search for the attacker, who may have lived in a rear house on the property. Investigators were trying to determine whether the suspect fled or remained in the house as it burned.

Fronterotta said the man wore a painter's mask, apparently to shield his identity.

Television footage showed a home gutted by flames and a plume of smoke rising over the residential neighborhood early Saturday.

Detectives determined the suspect set the house ablaze before opening fire with a weapon, Fronterotta said. Earlier the chief said the blaze was started after the gun attack.

Five neighboring houses were evacuated. Other nearby residents were told to remain inside with their doors locked. The suspect was described as armed and dangerous.

A 6-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were in critical condition, Fronterotta said. The woman, said to be the children's mother, was being treated for gunshot wounds to the knee and pelvis. An 8-year-old boy was uninjured.

The father was shielding two of his children when he was shot, the chief said. After being shot, the mother carried the wounded 4-year-old to a neighbor's yard. The boy later died.

Police have no motive.
