Judge orders Greek flag off garage door

MONTREAL, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A Canadian of Greek descent has been ordered to remove a Greek flag painted on his garage door.

Montreal Municipal Judge Andre Hotte ruled in favor of the borough of Pierrefonds, which has an ordinance banning the painting of signs on buildings, The Montreal Gazette reported. Theodore Antonopoulos said he plans to appeal.

"People cannot paint whatever they want on their homes," Hotte said as he delivered his ruling. "What about the aesthetic aspect? What if everyone painted their sports team, their country's flag, even Mickey Mouse on their home? If everyone expresses their patriotism, that is visual pollution and not harmonious with the neighborhood."

Antonopoulos' parents emigrated from Greece to Canada.

A spokesman for the borough said Antonopoulos will get a reasonable time to remove the offending flag.

Gee, I see your point. Then there would be at least one free country in all of North America! Can't let that happen, now can we?

Except for basics like where to put your septic tank and regulating pig farming, I never quite got some people's obsession with what their neighbor is doing.
I get it now, though. I realize these people are not interested in a place to live and raise their families. They are interested in increasing the value of property so they can turn it over and move on to yet another planned neighborhood.
While the people who intend to stay there and who may even think just because they own said property, they have freedom of speech, are the ones who lose in court for forgetting to read the fine print or underestimating the tennacity of "the Joneses".
I'm looking at a piece of real estate right now that is surprisingly easy to get into for the region of the country it is in. On further investigation, I found it lies adjacent to but not quite within the hard core zoning district of an adjoining county. So people aren't interested in it even though it has absolutely nothing on it right now but beautiful trees, good drainage, and road frontage! There loss will be my gain if I do decide to buy it. And you know if someone can't get their car started one morning and leaves it up on blocks, with an acre and a quarter of foliage surrounding me, I could give a rat's patootie!
might even buy me a rebel flag... just because I can...

Are you implying that this doesn't happen in the U.S.?

Tell that to the little old lady who owns an antique shop in the "tourist" district of Hartselle, Alabama.

For years she fought the city council over what color she could paint her building.

She started out by painting it a rather pleasant pink .... with maroon trim, if I remember correctly.

They sent her a notice that she had to paint it to match the other buildings in the area or face fines for breaking the city ordinance for the tourist district.

She hired a lawyer.

Then she hired a painter who covered one exterior wall of her building with an array of psychedelic polka dots.

I haven't been to Hartselle lately. But for several years, that is how it stood while the courts were deciding who would prevail in this epic battle.

Meanwhile, her polka dotted building became a bit of a tourist attraction as people told friends and relatives about it and they would swing into town from I65 just to have a look.

My question has always been, "Who gives a shit?"

Oh, and, "Why?"

Actually it means that everyone is losing their civil rights but some are losing theirs faster. Interestingly though, among other countries Canada is one of the Countries where some Americans are migrating to, especially since Bush came into office.
