Police and Bhutto supporters clash
LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani police Wednesday used tear gas on a group of journalists and supporters gathered outside parliament for a demonstration organized by former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, police sources told CNN. Hundreds of people took part in the demonstration, and many remain outside parliament, the sources said. There have been no arrests so far. Video showed Pakistani forces in uniform with shields and sticks trying to move a razor wire barricade surrounding the protesters. Other police fired tear gas canisters into the air. Some of the demonstrators clapped and and chanted slogans, while others raised their Bhutto posters into the air. Journalists aimed their cameras toward the line of police, who protected themselves with their shields as several protesters pushed the razor wire toward them. Earlier, Bhutto held a news conference in which she called on the people of Pakistan to join protests against the president's statewide emergency rule, despite the risk of a government crackdown and possible imprisonment. She said 400 of her supporters have been arrested since Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency on Saturday and imposed a massive crackdown to impose the measure. Bhutto is calling for a massive rally on Friday, but a spokesman for Musharraf's government warned that such a demonstration is outlawed under the emergency measures. Farhatullah Babar said protests originally planned for Friday to demand free and fair elections would now be targeted at President Pervez Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency and his suspension of the country's constitution. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to get any better either.
Four die in Pakistan bomb blast - CNN.com The reality is that people are not going to take it well when a government decides to suspend their already established civil rights. |

Many in the opposition want Mushareff out so they can come in and restrict people's rights EVEN MORE... Look at what happened in the Red Mosque a couple of months ago...The Radicals WANT the power so they can install Sharia Law and create an nation where religious rule takes over what's there now... They're not pissed Mushareff declared martial law...They're pissed because their way of life isn't being FORCED on the population...

It's like the minutemen wanting to secure our borders (patriotic idea), but they get support from the Klan who wants the same results for different reasons(get rid of the non-whites)... Of course, in my analogy, the result would still be positive for the country irrelevant of what the Klan thinks... Over in Pakistan, the people who are TRULY fighting for democracy don't realize that getting it could cause their destruction because the public is favoring radicals... That's actually happened to America, but nowhere close to the damage it would cause in Pakistan... Gerald Ford was so bad, the Democrats could've put up a complete idiot for President in 1976... ...and they did... By 1979, people were saying, "Damn...we would've rather had Ford again."... In Pakistan, if they hold democratic elections, the public doesn't realize that the people they want democratically elected into office will actually stifle democracy MORE in the long run...A few years from now, they'd be begging for Mushareff to come back...

How radical is the military?...For all we know, the second he takes the uniform off, the power gets transferred to someone else who causes a coup... I'm on board with you...but I'm also skiptical of periphery elements...

I think the American people STILL find it hard to understand that when the options are A)supporting the a-hole that supports you and B) supporting the a-hole that wants to kill you, you HAVE to go with the former... There are people here that still have that issue with Reagan and Latin America...They can't comprehend the results of us NOT backing the people we did...
