Russia and China has used their veto to kill a resolution imposing UN sanctions on President Mugabe and his inner circle in a vote taken by the security council.
So, now we know for sure that Russia and China stand by Mugabe and not the people of Zimbabwe. But perhaps we should not be surprised that two such repressive countries would stand by the government of another repressive country. The UN resolution would have imposed an arms embargo on Zimbabwe and clamped a worldwide asset freeze and travel ban on Mr Mugabe and 13 of his henchmen accused of orchestrating election abuses in the June 27 presidential run-off vote. Particularly bad news for China who supply arms to mugabe. Surprised? No. Disgusted? Yes. West suffers historic defeat as China and Russia veto Zimbabwe sanctions - Times Online |

This is hardly surprising. Many people suspect that while Dmitry Medvedev is now the Russian President, Putin as Prime Minister is still running the show. And the People's Republic of China, with its communist elite, can hardly be said to be reflective of the people's will either. I thought it was rather typical they so blatantly misused their veto in this manner.
One can only hope in the case of Mugabe that the hyperinflation and spiralling economy ravaging the country, together with international pressure, and perhaps his advanced age of 84 years, will combine to finally force him out of power after 28 years. He may have thugs, and he may have won the last farce of an election, but as history has repeatedly shown us, such as with the Romanovs, once the army deserts Mugabe, he will be finished. Given his present circumstances, he can be as obdurate as he wants, but events will eventually come to a head. |
