Thirty-six people have been detained in central Moscow during a gay rally which was held despite an official ban. It is reported that both gay rights activists and people opposed to the march were among those arrested.
While gay marches are common in many Western capitals, some say Russian society is too traditional for such events.

Moscow authorities had forbidden the event, saying they couldn't guarantee security.
In previous years, similar events have provoked a wave of protests – including some by church activists.

Last year several members of the European Parliament who came to support the rally were either attacked or arrested.

MOSCOW, June 1 (RIA Novosti) - Police detained thirteen people at an unauthorized gay parade in the center of Moscow, a spokesman for the Russian capital's interior department said on Sunday.
The gay parade, which took place on Moscow's Tverskaya Street on June 1, gathered around 200 people, mostly journalists and curious passers-by, the spokesman said.

Moscow authorities have rejected official applications by Gay Parade organizers over the past three years for permission to march, on the grounds that it would interfere with the rights and everyday lives of ordinary Muscovites.

Mayor Yury Luzhkov has branded gay parades "Satanic" and vowed that they will never be permitted in the capital, while the Russian Orthodox Church and various far-right groups have sworn to halt any attempt to hold a march in support of gay rights in Russia.

Last year, a Moscow court ruled that a city ban on a Gay Pride Parade was legal. Around 100 protestors subsequently gathered outside City Hall to submit a petition to the mayor against what they called an 'unfounded and illegal prohibition on holding the march in support of sexual minorities in Russia.'

Because diversity makes America stronger. That's what other nations fail to see. They think our diversity makes us weak, but it's the different perspectives that add to our uniqueness and productivity. Russia could have been a beautiful nation, but ideological zealots have ruined it's image. The same with many 'old world' powers.

Sad. I guess I really am lucky to have been born in the U.S.A. Thank you, North Pole, for allowing me to see how blessed I am.

I guess we as Americans lose sight of that sometimes and with all the globalization we start to assume that freedom rings clear across the world. But your post has shown me there is a deep dark hole where there is nothing but bigotry and hate.

I will paraphrase an old saying from WWII.

First they came after Methodists, but I wasn't a Methodist, so I didn't stand up , then they came after the homosexuals, but I'm not a homosexual, so I let it pass. Now They are coming after me, but there's no one left to take up my cause.

"Last year, Moscow came under unprecedented pressure to sanction the gay parade, which cannot be called anything other than satanic," Mr Luzhkov said.

It shows that the Mayor of Moscow is at best short sighted and at worst a bigot of the grandest scale. There isn't a place for that in a democracy.

Your Bolsheviks used the Jews to help fight the extremities of your Czar and effect a Revolution. Unfortunately, they and other good people were slaughtered and run out of Russia after coups that led to the ultimate totalitarian state under the guise of peaceful Communism. For two brief periods in history you were truly free-when Gorbachev tried to effect Glasnost and when the Russian Jews were helping their fellow Russians throw off the yolk of imperialism.
You should be proud of their struggle to win your freedom.
