A lawyer for a cameraman who was accompanying Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly in New York says his client has defected.

Paul O'Dwyer, a New York City-based lawyer who is representing Hassan Gol Khanban, confirmed Sunday that his client is seeking asylum in the U.S. He provided no other details.

The news about his cameraman comes on the heels of other troubling events for Ahmadinejad. Last week, Iranian authorities arrested Ahmadinejad's top press adviser.

The Iranian president called the situation "regretful."

Authorities on Wednesday took Ali Akbar Javanfekr into custody to begin serving a six-month sentence for publishing material deemed insulting to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The arrest is seen part of ongoing feud between Ahmadinejad and his conservative rivals ahead of June presidential elections in which Ahmadinejad is not allowed to run, under the law.

What do you all think? At this moment, and admittedly I'm in a foul mood, I tend to think that this guy must've supported the goat bearded little monkey he was hired to photograph. So, I tend to think "you made your bed, now go home to your theocratic paradise in Earth and lie in it!"

What do you all think? At this moment, and admittedly I'm in a foul mood, I tend to think that this guy must've supported the goat bearded little monkey he was hired to photograph. So, I tend to think "you made your bed, now go home to your theocratic paradise in Earth and lie in it!"

I tend to think the guy was pretty smart and has been planning his defection for some time. I can easily imagine someone striving to become part of ahmadinejad's entourage in the hopes that one day it would lead him to the US or another country that offers asylum.

Prior to his attempt to defect, what danger was he in?? There's no doubt that his life in Iran is pretty much over now, but what about before he tried to defect?? If he wasn't in danger THEN, I don't really see how we can grant him asylum. I do think that we should suck every bit of intel possible from him before breaking the news to him...
