RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Mitt Romney is undermining hopes for peace and democracy in the Middle East, a senior Palestinian official said Thursday in response to recent remarks to donors by the Republican presidential candidate that Palestinians have "no interest whatsoever" in peace.

Saeb Erekat, a top aide to President Mahmoud Abbas, rejected Romney's claim.

"No one stands to gain more from peace than the Palestinians, and no one stands to lose from the absence of peace like the Palestinians," Erekat told reporters. Those who tolerated Israel's continued occupation of Palestinian territories, are "working against democracy and peace," he added.

The Palestinian official called on leaders to "create hope and opportunities, not despair." In an apparent swipe at Romney, he said, "anyone who says Arabs are not ready for democracy is a racist."

Erekat spoke ahead of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York at which Abbas is expected to present a plan to seek a "nonmember state" status for the Palestinians.

With peace talks with Israel stalled for the past four years, Palestinians have turned to the United Nations for international recognition of their sovereignty in areas Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war: the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.

While U.N. recognition would be largely symbolic, the Palestinians believe it would send a powerful message to Israel and bolster their case in future negotiations over the territories. Israel insists a Palestinian state can only be formed through peace negotiations.

Last year, the Palestinians asked the U.N. Security Council to admit them as a full member state. They failed to receive enough votes, in part because the United States fiercely opposed their bid. Next week, they will seek the lesser status of "nonmember state" in the General Assembly, a much larger body dominated by developing countries sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

Erekat did not say when Palestinians would officially submit their application, but hinted it could be in late November, after the U.S. presidential elections.

He said he expects up to 170 countries to support the bid.

A video with Romney's comments was posted on Tuesday on the website of the magazine Mother Jones. He was asked about the "Palestinian problem."

"The Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace," Romney said. "The pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Marked by the U.S. Embassy seal, advertisements condemning an anti-Islam video appeared on Pakistani television on Thursday in an apparent attempt to undercut anger against the United States, where the film was produced. Hundreds of youths, however, clashed with security officials as they tried in vain to reach the embassy in Islamabad amid anger in many countries over the film's vulgar depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

The advertisements appear to be an effort by the U.S. government to dampen chaos surrounding the film and undo some of the damage to America's image in the Muslim world. Violence linked to the movie has left at least 30 people in seven countries dead, including the American ambassador to Libya. Two people have died in protests in Pakistan.

In recent days, the decision by a French satirical magazine to release cartoons crudely depicting the prophet has added to the tension, as may the upcoming issue of the German satirical magazine Titanic. The magazine's co-editor Martin Sonneborn said it was up to readers to decide whether the cover of an Arab wielding a sword actually depicts the Prophet Muhammad.

Most outrage appears linked to the amateurish movie, which portrays the prophet as a fraud, womanizer and child molester.

The television ads in Pakistan feature clips of President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during press appearances in Washington in which they condemned the video. Their words were subtitled in Urdu.

"We absolutely reject its content and message," said Clinton in the advertisement.

A caption on the ad reads: "Paid Content."

I love it when azzholes say **** like this; "anyone who says Arabs are not ready for democracy is a racist."

They're learning from democrats, when all else fails pull the race card.

Romney was speaking the truth and these mental midgets in Paly land call it racist. They have no room to even use the word when they are trying their damnest to kill Jews.

If Romney becomes President it will set the world back on track for a nuclear war. Some are going to have to accept neither Palestinians nor Jews are to be prefered as far as a peace process goes. Yes we stand and protect Israel, but in peace negotiations we should be as neutral a broker as possible.

The only way for peace to come to the Isaeli's and the paly's is for them to go to war and have a fight to the finish. No country should step in to stop it either.

You don't win peace by UN fiat, it can't be done.

seems some haven't looked at the Date of the Attacks,and the Fact that news out of Egypt by Morsi claims that some Protesters were paid,and news out of Libya,that it was an orchestrated,rather than a spontaneous thing!
And I am getting less and less sure whether the Arab-Palestinians ever wanted a peaceful Solution!
