Japan Is World's Least Sexy Nation

I read somewhere that this is a thing that happens to industrialized nations after a while; their birth rates drop, and population actually starts to decline.

I'm being lazy in not looking this up, sorry, but I am pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that this is happening in a number of European countries.

I also seem to remember that Russia had started a new national holiday called Conception Day, where married couples got the day off work, paid, to stay home and make babies.

And while I am remembering things fuzzily, I do believe the birth rate in the USA is below "replacement" level too, and that the only reason the population is continuing to grow is immigration.

Oh, and I also prefer a woman in a baseball cap to a catholic school girl, but that may be because I love baseball and do not love the catholic church.

It took a while, but in your own way I think you got around to explaining the dropping birth rates. It IS women kicking butt.

Or at least having sufficient status within the society to influence reproductive choices.

I agree that's an aspect of birth rates, but that doen't explain the lack of sex...

Good point, LL. Declining birth rates definitely result partly from the availability and social acceptance of contraception, abortion, etc. But that's not exactly what I was referring to. I was talking (vaguely, I admit) about women's rising economic status. Here's a bit about your point, and mine.

In addition, women's ability to control the number of children they have is a positive development, freeing them from a life of ongoing pregnancies.

But, they wonder, are women restricting the size of families through free choice - or because financial concerns and worries about their position at work prevent them from having as many children as they might like.

There are multiple reasons why the birth rate has become so low in Japan. Worldwide the marriage age has increased as women are more independent and a competing force in the workplace. That though can not be used as a viable factor since other countries have the same issues and still a higher birth rate.

The Japanese people when asked blame money worries, working and raising a family and lack of support for mothers.

The women's movement, for example. Women no longer feel obligated to marry (check the rates of unmarried women in Spain and Italy, both countries with low birth rates). They also are becoming more economically independent and career-minded.

I'm telling you...that particular culture has a repressed perversion that is disturbing on so many levels.

I do business in Japan on a regular basis.

A friend of mine asked one of our company's Japanese colleagues about the short skirts worn by many Japanese girls. He said that in America, the short skirts would not be allowed out of concern that older men would leer at them.

The Japanese man's response (and I honestly don't know if he was putting us on) was that he honestly hadn't even thought about such a thing. (Which is kinda funny if you know the guy. He keeps talking about getting us to bring him Viagra when we visit. He's evidently doing his part to try and combat the problem, if he lives up to his talk. Although honestly, he's a rarity in that most don't even discuss such things, at least not with the gaijin.)

You see people carrying Japanese anime that would make a gay ex-sailor blush. (And I've been to San Fran's gay pride. )

It's interesting to me to hear about this Japanese "sex" problem, considering the prevalence of "hostess bars" in the Japanese society.

But perhaps there is an element of "commuting" involved as well, as some of the people commute (via train) to their work for over an hour, which I don't think I could handle. But it would definitely be a mood killer when you walk in the door.

A lot "commute" in that they travel to the location of their work, take up temporary lodging in the vicinity for the work week, and then commute home for the week-end. Which would probably also impact this "sex" problem.
Although one would think that when one got home to the wife, that would be an impetus to have sex...

I just don't think Japanese men look sexy at all. Maybe Japanese women don't think so either.

AS a man who spent nearly 2 years doing my best to meet as many Japanese women as I could, that was something I heard a lot. But then again, I WAS talking to Japanese women that were dating a 6'6" 230lb. black guy. Those tastes probably are hard to come by in Japan. My sampling might have been skewed a bit.
Although "Black" is "in" in Japan right now.

I agree. I have always appreciated beauty and excellence. Not a very accomplished visual artist or performer myself, I applaud the pure voice and the fine form. Some of the most beautiful (relative, I know) art work in the world is from Japanese artists. Some of the most gorgeous photographs, prints and drawings are of Japanese women.
