.Iran says it will not return US drone

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI | AP – 9 hrs ago. 11 Dec. 2011

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran will not return a U.S. surveillance drone captured by its armed forces, a senior commander of the country's elite Revolutionary Guard said Sunday.

Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy head of the Guard, said in remarks broadcast on state television that the violation of Iran's airspace by the U.S. drone was a "hostile act" and warned of a "bigger" response. He did not elaborate on what Tehran might do.

"No one returns the symbol of aggression to the party that sought secret and vital intelligence related to the national security of a country," Salami said.

Iranian television broadcast video Thursday of Iranian military officials inspecting what it identified as the RQ-170 Sentinel drone.

Iranian state media have said the unmanned spy aircraft was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the border with Afghanistan. U.S. officials have acknowledged losing the drone.

Salami called its capture a victory for Iran and a defeat for the U.S. in a complicated intelligence and technological battle.

"Iran is among the few countries that possesses the most modern technology in the field of pilotless drones. The technology gap between Iran and the U.S. is not much," he said.

Officers in the Guard, Iran's most powerful military force, had previously claimed that the country's armed forces brought down the surveillance aircraft with an electronic ambush, causing minimum damage to the drone.

American officials have said that U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that Iran neither shot the drone down, nor used electronic or cybertechnology to force it from the sky. They contend the drone malfunctioned. The officials had spoken anonymously in order to discuss the classified program.

But Salami refused to provide more details of Iran's claim to have captured the CIA-operated aircraft.

"A party that wins in an intelligence battle doesn't reveal its methods. We can't elaborate on the methods we employed to intercept, control, discover and bring down the pilotless plane," he said.

That's odd. I thought for sure they would call and say "Hey, Did you lose a drone?"

.Syrian defectors hit back as death toll tops 5,000

AFP – 1 hr 21 mins ago. 13 Dec. 2011

Army defectors ambushed a Syrian security patrol Tuesday, killing seven in revenge for a raid that cost 11 civilian lives, activists said, as the UN estimated more than 5,000 have died in the crackdown.

and a damn sorry way of my desire for them to become unleashed

State media said Syrian border guards shot dead two "terrorists" from Turkey in other violence after a UN Security Council meeting at which Western nations stepped up pressure to condemn the deadly campaign against dissent.

At the meeting, UN rights chief Navi Pillay gave the latest death toll -- amounting to a jump of 1,000 in less than two weeks -- as she appealed to the Council to launch a crimes against humanity case.

Pillay's private briefing to the 15-nation council -- where Russia and China blocked a resolution condemning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in October -- heightened divisions over how to respond to the Syrian violence.

She told reporters she had given the new toll of more than 5,000 dead -- including some 300 children -- and recommended that the crackdown by Assad's regime be referred to the International Criminal Court.

"The widespread and systematic nature of the killings, the detentions and the acts of torture -- I felt that these acts constituted crimes against humanity," said Pillay.

The "intolerable" situation in Syria -- where more than 14,000 people have been detained -- has seen 12,400 flee into neighbouring countries since protests erupted in March, she said.

"Inaction by the international community will embolden Syrian authorities, and ensure perpetrators go unpunished," Pillay said.

The Security Council meeting came as Western nations ramp up pressure to condemn Assad's campaign.

And we know just what China & Russia will say.

"Frankly we think that it is past time for the UN Security Council to speak up," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters, denouncing Security Council silence on the Syrian regime as "unconscionable."

.Iran demands Afghanistan block US drone flights

AP – 7 hrs ago. 15 Dec. 2011

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's foreign minister demanded Thursday that Afghanistan stop allowing the U.S. to use bases in the country to launch drone flights over Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iran has displayed a pilotless American aircraft it says was forced to land two weeks ago during a mission over Iran. The U.S. says it went down because of a malfunction.

"We have demanded the government of Afghanistan study the case seriously and not allow such an incident to happen anymore, otherwise it will be seen as an unfriendly act," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said, according to the report.

He also urged all of Iran's neighbors not to allow the United States to "misuse" their lands and airspace.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday that the U.S. will continue the operations.

Speaking at a news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Panetta said the operations were part of U.S. efforts to defend both Afghanistan and the U.S. homeland and involve "important intelligence operations which we will continue to pursue."

Karzai, meanwhile, said Afghanistan doesn't want to be involved in any "adversarial relations" between the U.S. and Iran.

Earlier this week, Iran summoned an Afghan envoy to protest the violation of its airspace by the U.S. surveillance drone.

Iran has said the unmanned aircraft was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the border with Afghanistan.

The RQ-170 Sentinel drone was lost over Iran two weeks ago. Iranian state television broadcast video of Iranians inspecting the aircraft, which was largely intact.

Iran has called the operation an "invasion and hostile act" and rejected a U.S. demand for returning the drone.

Look at the title and this is one thing that did not make it to Iran... Thanks to some in Russia who work with an International body of experts.

Russia seizes radioactive material bound for Iran

Posted 16 Dec. 2011

Russia on Friday seized a consignment of the radioactive isotope Sodium-22 used for medical and research purposes at a Moscow airport from a Tehran-bound passenger, the customs service said.

"Tests showed that the Sodium-22 could only have been obtained as the result of the work of a nuclear reactor," it said in a statement. "A criminal enquiry has been opened and the materials transferred to prosecutors."

Customs had been alerted by a warning system at Sheremetyevo airport ahead of the Moscow to Tehran flight that background radiation in the departures hall was 20 times the norm. A passenger's bag was then searched.

"Eighteen metallic objects of industrial origin were found, packed into individual steel boxes," it said.

"Tests then found that the objects were in fact the radioactive isotope Sodium-22 that had been machine-produced."

No further details were immediately available on the consignment or the identity of the passenger who was carrying the materials.

Spokesman for Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom Sergei Novikov said Sodium-22 was used for medical and research purposes and produced in so-called cyclotrons, a type of particle accelerator, and not in nuclear reactors.

"There are a lot of cyclotrons in Russia," he told AFP, adding that they were used in medical and educational establishments where security levels were not as tight as those at nuclear reactors.

Rosatom only supplies Iran with medical isotopes, molybdenum-99 and iodine-131, Novikov added, without providing further details.

Russia has relatively close ties with Iran and has built its first nuclear power station in the southern city of Bushehr. Moscow has also delivered the nuclear fuel for the reactor.

Moscow has echoed Western concerns about the nature of the Iranian nuclear programme but has stopped short of publicly accusing Tehran of seeking atomic weapons and always said that the standoff should be solved by diplomacy.

Experts have long called for tight controls against nuclear smuggling so Iran cannot get hold of materials it is barred from obtaining under UN Security Council sanctions.

Well election time a coming in Iran, what are the odds of any reformist winning?

..Leader: Iranian reformists will run in elections

AP – 3 hrs ago... 19 Dec. 2011
.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A report quotes Iran's former president as predicting pro-reform figures will run in the next election.

The report by the semiofficial Mehr news agency Monday quoted Mohammad Khatami as saying reformists will not boycott the March 2012 parliamentary elections. Khatami has emerged as a leader of the reform movement.

Over the past months, many reformists leaders have said they will not run, reflecting deep dissatisfaction with the results of the 2009 election, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected president. Many opposition figures charged the election was rigged.

Since then the establishment has cracked down on the opposition, which responded by boycotting the political system. It was not clear whether Khatami's remarks indicated a shift in that position or a split in the ranks.

.Iran parliament sends condolences over Kim Jong-Il

AFP – 1 hr 6 mins ago. 19 Dec. 2011

Iran's lawmakers on Monday sent condolences to the parliament of North Korea over the death of Kim Jong-Il, with speaker Ali Larijani saying he grieved the loss of the leader of "the friendly nation," according to the ISNA news agency.

"I was much saddened when I was informed of the passing of Mr Kim Jong-Il, great leader of the friendly nation, the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea," read Larijani's message to his North Korean counterpart, Choe Tae-Bok.

"On behalf of myself and my colleagues in parliament... I would like to express my sympathy to your government and nation and offer my condolences to you and his family," the message said.

Both North Korea and Iran are subject to international sanctions over their nuclear activities, and the two countries' governments share a deep hostility towards the United States.

Pyongyang is also suspected of transferring banned ballistic missile technology to Tehran.

A confidential UN report, parts of which AFP gained access to in May this year, asserted that missile-related items were flown from North Korea to Iran on regular commercial flights by the countries' respective flagship airlines.

Iran and its allies Russia and China have rejected the report's allegations as false.

Found another news story where Iran still backs it's demented friend and Allie.

.Iran backs ally Syria on Arab League plan

AFP – 5 hrs ago. 19 Dec. 2011

Iran on Monday said it backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's decision to start implementing an Arab League plan to quell the violence in his country by finally letting in observers.

But Tehran suggested it was not entirely happy with the pressure Arab states had brought to bear on Damascus, with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying their action towards Syria was "like a joke."

Iran's deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, Hossein Amir Abdolahian, told the state Arabic language television network Al-Alam that "Iran's official stance regarding Syria and the Arab League plan is that whatever Bashar al-Assad deems as acceptable, we would approve of and accept."

He added that the Arab League plan "contains many of the points Iran was also looking at," even if not all concerns were addressed.

Ahmadinejad, though, criticised Arab nations for the way they had been treating Syria, Iran's principal ally in the Middle East.

"Certain regional countries carry out acts which Iran considers to be more like a joke," the official IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

"Some regional countries, which have never held an election, have come together and pass resolutions against another country saying 'Why don't you hold an election'?" he said.

Syria on Monday signed an agreement to allow foreign observers in to monitor the implementation of the Arab League plan designed to halt nine months of bloodshed that started when security forces cracked down on pro-democracy protesters.

The plan calls for a complete halt to the violence, the release of those detained as a result of recent events and the complete withdrawal of the military from towns and residential districts.

I need to see this happen before I believe it.

Syria was suspended from Arab League meetings and subjected to a raft of sanctions when it initially refused to let in the observers.

.Iran's navy to hold drill in international waters

By NASSER KARIMI | AP – 5 hrs ago. 22 Dec. 2011

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's navy chief said Thursday his forces plan to hold a 10-day drill in international waters beyond the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, an exercise that could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels.

The drill will be Iran's latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its controversial nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at producing atomic weapons — charges that Tehran denies, insisting the program is for peaceful purposes only.

The Strait of Hormuz is of strategic significance as the passageway for about a third of the world's oil tanker traffic. Beyond it lie vast bodies of water, including the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet is also active in the area, as are warships of several other countries that patrol for pirates there.
