Venezuela hunts for copter pilot behind 'terrorist attack'

The last 24 hours in Venezuela have been volatile, beginning with widespread looting in the coastal city of Maracay on Monday night and continued Tuesday with a police helicopter firing on Venezuela's Supreme Court and Interior Ministry while opposition lawmakers scuffled with security forces assigned to protect the National Assembly. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Oscar Perez is a cop, pilot, action movie star and dog trainer. He's now also a fugitive, accused of strafing two key Venezuelan government buildings from a helicopter in a quixotic attempt to set off a revolt against President Nicolas Maduro.

Authorities on Wednesday conducted a nationwide manhunt for Perez a day after the government charged that he stole the police chopper and directed grenades and gunfire against the Supreme Court and Interior Ministry in what Maduro called a "terrorist attack."

getting violent as pro forces attack opposition lawmakers... It is going to get out of hand quickly from this point on unless citizen slow down before Government Forces are used to make them summit. I believe this action was held on orders by the Leadership just for this reason to use govt., forces as it gets out of hand..

Govt supporters storm Venezuela congress, injuring lawmakers

By JOSHUA GOODMAN
Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Pro-government militias wielding wooden sticks and metal bars stormed congress on Wednesday and began attacking opposition lawmakers during a special session coinciding with Venezuela's independence day.

Four lawmakers were injured and blood was splattered on the neoclassical legislature's white walls. One of them, Americo de Grazia, had to be taken in a stretcher to an ambulance suffering from convulsions, said a fellow congressman.

"This doesn't hurt as much as watching how every day how we lose a little bit more of our country," Armando Arias said from inside an ambulance as he was being treated for head wounds that spilled blood across his clothes.

The attack, in plain view of national guardsmen assigned to protect the legislature, comes amid three months of often-violent confrontations between security forces and protesters who accuse the government of trying to establish a dictatorship by jailing foes, pushing aside the opposition-controlled legislature and rewriting the constitution to avoid fair elections.

Tensions were already high after Vice President Tareck El Aissami made an unannounced morning visit to the National Assembly, accompanied by top government and military officials, for an event celebrating independence day.

The short appearance at the congress by top officials who have repeatedly dismissed the legislators as a band of U.S.-backed conspirators was seen by many as a provocation.

Standing next to a display case holding the founding charter, El Aissami said global powers are once again trying to subjugate Venezuela.

Former Brazil leader convicted of corruption, gets jail time

Updated at 2:31 p.m.

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been convicted of corruption and money laundering charges and sentenced to nine and a half years in prison.

Still, Lula — as he's commonly known — has long denied the charges and plans to appeal the conviction. He will remain free as long as that appeals process unfolds.

Federal Judge Sergio Moro found the popular politician guilty of illegally taking more than $1 million in kickbacks from an engineering company, using the money to refurbish a beachfront apartment.

Yet this is hardly the only charge Lula faced — and far from the end of his difficult legal straits. Bloomberg reports this case was just one of five filed against the left-wing politician, ranging from "allegations of influence peddling to accepting perks from companies in exchange for government favors."

Even as his appeal is heard in this case, he faces four more trials over corruption allegations.

Prosecutors had long been "building a case that alleges millions of dollars' worth of payments and goods were funneled from Petrobras, Brazil's biggest company, to Silva and his associates," NPR's Bill Chappell noted last year. "An official prosecutor's statement lists real estate, construction work and luxury furniture as some of the alleged ill-gotten gains, along with suspicious cash donations."

"The present conviction does not bring this judge any personal satisfaction. Quite the contrary, it is regrettable that a former president be criminally convicted," Moro said in his decision, the Associated Press reports. "It doesn't matter how high you are, the law is still above you."

The marquee conviction is just the latest development in a massive corruption probe known as Operation Car Wash, which has also shaken the tenure of Brazil's current president, Michel Temer

Well still Civil War in Venezuela, but it will happen if this sham is allowed to continue..
Each of the neighboring countries needs to send in troop to stop this mess and see to the needs of the people which the govt. has failed to do.

Latest: US hits Venezuela president with sanctions

Electoral authorities said more than 8 million people voted Sunday to create a constitutional assembly endowing President Nicolas Maduro’s ruling party with virtually unlimited powers - a figure widely disputed by independent analysts. (Ariana Cubillos/Associated Press)

CARACAS, Venezuela — The Latest on Venezuela’s election of an assembly to rewrite its constitution (all times local):

3:45 p.m.

The Trump administration has hit Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with financial sanctions.

The move comes after Venezuela held a weekend election that will give Maduro’s ruling party virtually unlimited power in the South American country.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced the sanctions against Maduro in a brief statement on Monday, a day after the Venezuelan vote to elect a constituent assembly that will rewrite the constitution. A longer explanation from the White House was also expected.

The administration imposed sanctions on more than a dozen senior current and former Venezuelan officials last week, warning the socialist government that new penalties would come if Maduro went ahead with Sunday’s election for the assembly.

Voting in Ecatepec, Mexico. In Mexico, all candidates are selected by the party, and officials serve one term before being shuffled off to another post.

MEXICO CITY — The forces driving violence in Mexico, which is now on track for its worst year in decades, were first set in motion 20 years ago by two events that were, at the time, celebrated as triumphs.

First, Colombia defeated its major drug cartels in the 1990s, driving the center of the drug trade from the country into Mexico.
