Nicolas Sarkozy confirms split with Cécilia

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and his wife Cécilia are divorcing by mutual consent, the president's office has announced, ending weeks of speculation about their 11-year old marriage.

The 15-word statement said the couple would not make any comment about their divorce.

Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Cécilia, have begun divorce proceedings, according to sources

Pressure had been building on Nicolas Sarkozy to make a
statement about his marriage to Cécilia

There was no reaction to French media reports that the pair secretly saw a judge on Monday to initiate divorce proceedings. It is the first time in modern French history that a serving president has separated from his wife.

One historian pointed out that there is a precedent in France: Napoleon, to whom Mr Sarkozy is sometimes likened.

The announcement bizarrely followed an Elysée press conference earlier today in which presidential spokesman David Martinon flatly refused to comment on the situation.

Frenetic rumours over Cécilia, who fills the front cover of almost every glossy magazine displayed on Paris newsstands - including exclusive images of her in Paris Match alone in a Parisian hotel taken last week - all but eclipsed a massive day of nationwide transport strikes.

Newspaper Liberation's headline was "Desperate Housewife."

+ France is an active ally again.

- Rumors of immorality and a Clintonesque affair is not a good thing.

Why should we care? I mean, I don't see where it directly impacts foreign policy so...

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this, people fall in and out of love everyday. I've been married for 37 years, why go out for hamburger when I have steak at home? I just don't worry about other peoples relationships..2

DEAR READERS:

What the preceding two posts demonstrate perfectly is the difference between Conservatives and Liberals.

Liberals would have an opinion and feel strongly about what they think should or shouldn't be done about Sarkozy's affair.

So, just what would you "conservatives" have done about this? Toss 'im out of office? Stoning for both of them? Cut off diplomatic relations with France until they reconcile?

Uh, yeah okay. What did the conservatives do about Clinton's affairs? My bullshit detector is going off the charts right now.

Be careful of putting all Conservatives in the same basket...

I couldn't care less if Clinton had 60 affairs with 60 interns...

What I DO care about is when the president lies to a Federal Grand Jury and is also found to obstruct justice by getting other witnesses to lie in testimony and through affidavits...

I don't care if it was for getting a hummer, getting illegal cable, driving through a red light or drinking expired milk...

His actions were not the issue...his REactions were...and they were unacceptable...

But you are not going to tell me honestly that the whole thing didn't start because a bunch of conservatives thought he shouldn't be having an affair and went so far enforcing their opinion that he ended up in front of a grand jury.

I'm just saying, neither wing has a monopoly on needing to be told to STFU and MYOB.

That EXACTLY what I'm going to tell you...

Do you know who approved the investigation expanding to include the allegations of obstrycting justice and lying to a Federal Grand Jury?...

Hint...Wasn't a Conservative...

Quote:
On January 15, Starr obtained approval from Attorney General Janet Reno, who in turn sought and received an order from the United States Court of Appeals, to expand the scope of the Whitewater probe into the new allegations. On the following day, a meeting between Ms. Lewinsky and Ms. Tripp at a hotel was secretly recorded pursuant to a court order, with federal agents then confronting Ms. Lewinsky at the end of the meeting with charges of her perjury and demanding that she cooperate in providing evidence against the President. Ms. Lewinsky initially declined to cooperate, and told the FBI and other investigators that much of what she had told Ms. Tripp was not true.

I'm still not buying that conservatives are any less inclined to assert their opinions about the personal lives of others than liberals are. I was here for the Clinton scandal...I remember. It wasn't liberals with their panties in a bunch over a bj from an intern.
