Atlas Shrugged hits a little too close to home too.
I tried Atlas Shrugged three times. Rand's prose is as cold, emotionless, and dead as a fish to me. Just couldn't do it.

Well I have been so busy lately that this book came due at the library before I could come even remotely close to finishing it--I got about 100 pages in, and it clocks in around 800 pages. From what I was able to have the time to read it was extremely well-written and Chernow really brought Washington and the other characters to life. I am putting it on my 'to buy' list as soon as the 'new' wears off and I can find a nice, clean copy on Half.com for much less than the exorbitant $40 list price.

Since I'll probably be busy for the next few weeks I'm going back to reading my own stock, some books that I have not read yet and which have no due date. Now I'm starting one of my Christmas presents:

I guess that's what makes literature wonderful. I read Rand and I see it oozing emotion. Maybe not warmth, but plenty of emotion.

I just finished a REALLY bad book called Seducing Mr. Darcy. For some reason a book has to completely blow (and be too long for me to slog through) before I will just let it go.

I just started The Sweet Scent of Blood by Suzanne McLeod. I think I'm really going to like it.

The Betrayal of the American Dream

Quote:
A fiercely-reported indictment of how the American middle class has been condemned to terminal decline, from the authors of the New York Times bestseller America: What Went Wrong

THE BETRAYAL OF THE AMERICAN DREAM is the story of how a small number of people in power have deliberately put in place policies that have enriched themselves while cutting the ground out from underneath America's greatest asset--its middle class. Their actions, going back more than three decades, have relegated untold numbers of American men and women to the economic scrap heap--to lives of reduced earnings, chronic job insecurity, and a retirement with fewer and fewer benefits. Millions have lost their jobs. Others have lost their homes. Nearly all face an uncertain future.

The attack on the middle class goes back long before that. We warned that by squeezing the middle class, the nation was heading toward a two-class society dramatically imbalanced in favor of the wealthy. At the time, the plight of middle-class Americans victimized by corporate excess was dismissed by economists as nothing more than the result of a dynamic market economy in which some people lose jobs while others move into new jobs--"creative destruction," it was called. Soon, they said, the economy would create new opportunities and new jobs. We said, Don't believe it. What happened to the middle class...wasn't just a blip, but part of a disturbing pattern: a shift by Washington away from policies that had built the American middle class and enabled successive generations to do better than their parents, in favor of policies that catered to Wall Street, corporate chieftains, and America's wealthiest citizens.

In the process, both Democratic and Republican administrations ditched the notion that all Americans should be treated equally, that the playing field should be level for everyone. America must stop sacrificing its greatest asset. Because, without a middle class, there isn't really an America.
The Betrayal of the American Dream is an eye opener and most disturbing. The notion that we are just going through an economic "cycle" and that this is "just another recession" is false. It's about policy and betrayal for profit and the idea that the middle class is truly expendable.

Interesting and very depressing.

The Devil in the White City

Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction.

Deadliest Sea: The Untold Story Behind the Greatest Rescue in Coast Guard History by Kalee Thompson. This book is about the biggest sea rescue and the second largest rescue operation (behind Hurricane Katrina). March 23, 2008, the Alaska Ranger began taking on water out in the Bering Sea. The Coast Guard had two helicopters to rescue 47 people from a sinking ship. The flights were about 4 hours there, four hours back originally launched BSU Kodiak. Amazing story so far.

I just read a thriller from Brad Thor called Full Black.

Amazon.com: Full Black: A Thriller (Scot Harvath) (9781416586616): Brad Thor: Books Amazon.com: Full Black: A Thriller (Scot Harvath) (9781416586616): Brad Thor: Books

The villain is a George Soros kind of character, and Thor goes into political detail from a right wing perspective. I've read some reviews that object to the detail as distracting. It's interesting because these same reviewers would be raving about background information in something like The Davinci Code.

BTW Full Black rocks.

I'm on a 90 days to read the Bible chronologically reading plan. It's a real challenge, since I have to give up about 1/2 - 1 hour a night.

I'm also reading "Divine Mentor" by Wayne Cordeiro.
