.Taliban threaten to kill Pakistani cricket star

By ISHTIAQ MAHSUD | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago. 8 August 2012 ........

SHAWAL, Pakistan (AP) — The Taliban have threatened to kill a Pakistani cricket star turned politician if he holds a planned march to their tribal stronghold along the Afghan border to protest U.S. drone attacks.

Although the Pakistani Taliban also oppose the strikes, which have killed many of their fighters, spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said they would target Imran Khan because he calls himself a "liberal" — a term they associate with a lack of religious belief. He also warned they would attack anyone who participates in upcoming elections.

"If he comes, our suicide bombers will target him," Ahsan told The Associated Press in an interview Monday in the militant group's stronghold of South Waziristan. "We will kill him."

The threat could come as a surprise to many in Pakistan who have criticized Khan for not being tough enough on the Pakistani Taliban and instead focusing most of his criticism on the government's alliance with the U.S.

Some of his critics have nicknamed him "Taliban Khan" because of his views and his cozy ties with conservative Islamists who could help him attract right-wing voters in national elections likely to be held later this year or early next year.

Khan, who is the founder of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party, has gained momentum over the last year after more than a decade in politics. He is perhaps the most famous person in Pakistan because he led the country's cricket team to victory in the 1992 World Cup.

.Bomb kills three soldiers in Pakistan's Waziristan

AFP – 3 hrs ago. 12 August 2012 .............................

A remote-controlled bomb attack on Sunday killed three soldiers in Pakistan's troubled Waziristan district, where Islamabad has resisted US pressure to launch a full-scale offensive against an insurgency.

Pakistan security officials said the bomb targeted a military convoy which was moving from Mirali town to Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district, which has become the most notorious Taliban and Al-Qaeda stronghold on Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

So clean it up remove the enemy, your enemy to, if your govt., & Military has woken up?

"Three soldiers were killed and three were wounded in the blast. Their vehicle was completely destroyed," a senior security official based in the region's main Peshawar city told AFP.

Another senior security official confirmed the incident and death toll, adding that a second military vehicle was also badly damaged.

Islamabad has told Washington that US forces must seal the Afghan border in the event of any offensive against the Al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network in North Waziristan, an official said Saturday.

The Haqqanis, blamed for some of the deadliest attacks in Afghanistan and whose leaders are understood to be based in the Pakistani tribal district, is one of the thorniest issues between Islamabad and Washington.

after ten plus years someone in Pakistan has his head where it belongs.
And now realizes they need us to help them, clean up their mess. And do they realize we need them to help us yet? I mean without paying for it!

Because they aren't going to pay us a dime to do what they had allowed to fester for so long.

.12 hurt in Pakistan bomb blast: police

AFP – 1 hr 23 mins ago. 13 August 2012 ............

At least 12 people were wounded when a bomb hidden under a cot exploded near a restaurant where people had gathered to celebrate Pakistan's Independence Day in Baluchistan late Monday, police said.

The explosive device, fitted with a timer, was placed outside the restaurant in the southwestern province's capital Quetta, local police chief Mir Zubair Mehmood said.

It was timed to explode late in the night when people had gathered on the eve of Pakistan's 66th Independence Day being observed on Tuesday, he said.

"At least 12 people were injured, one of them is in serious condition," Mehmood told AFP.

He blamed militants, saying "they wanted to create panic to disturb the national day celebrations".

There was no claim of responsibility for the latest incident but the province which borders Iran and Afghanistan suffers from Taliban attacks.

It is also a flashpoint for sectarian violence involving Sunni and Shiite Muslims that has left thousands of people dead since the late 1980s.

Baluch rebels rose up in 2004, demanding political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the oil, gas and mineral resources in the region.

Bomb blasts and attacks on police and security forces are frequent in insurgency-plagued Baluchistan, which is one of the most deprived areas of Pakistan.

.Three troops, 23 militants dead in Pakistan clash: officials

AFP – 4 hrs ago. 14 August 2012 ............................

An operation to clear Taliban from a volatile area of Pakistan's northwest left three soldiers and 23 militants dead on Tuesday, officials said.

Armed fighting erupted in the Dalainey area of Orakzai tribal district, along the Afghan border, after troops launched their assault.

"During the clash, 23 militants were killed while three security personnel embraced shahadat (martyrdom)," a senior official of the paramilitary Frontier Corps told AFP.

Would that news help you deal with a lost?

"Eighteen security personnel were also wounded in the clash."

The operation to drive the militants from the area and retake control of important mountain heights had been successful, another official said.

I bet the insurgents are back in the same area right after the Military leaves. See just below!

It was not possible to confirm the death toll independently because the far-flung district is inaccessible to media and aid workers.

Orakzai is one of seven districts in Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal belt, where Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants have carved out strongholds used to plot attacks on Pakistan.

Pakistan has lost more than 3,000 soldiers in the fight against homegrown insurgents but has resisted US pressure to do more to eliminate havens used by those fighting the Americans in Afghanistan.

.Taliban carry out brazen attack on Pakistan base

By REBECCA SANTANA and B.K. BANGASH | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago.

KAMRA, Pakistan (AP) — Heavily armed Taliban fighters blasted their way into a Pakistani air force base with possible links to the country's nuclear program in a brazen assault that took two hours of fighting to put down, leaving a security officer and nine insurgents dead and underscoring the group's continued threat despite numerous military offensives.

Hours later, Taliban gunmen in northern Pakistan forced 20 Shiite Muslims off buses, lined them up and killed them, the latest in a series of sectarian attacks that the government has seemingly done little to stop.

The separate incidents emphasize two daunting challenges the nuclear-armed country faces. The Pakistani Taliban continue to pose a potent threat despite numerous military offensives against their sanctuaries along the Afghan border. At the same time, sectarian violence plagues the Sunni majority country where Shiite Muslims often feel under attack.

While the Pakistani Taliban have carried out hundreds of bombings and other attacks, raids against military bases are somewhat uncommon. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, said they carried out Thursday's pre-dawn attack as revenge for the death of Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud in a U.S. drone strike in 2009 and the American commando raid that killed al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden last year.

The large Air Force Base Minhas, located only about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Islamabad, hosts fighter jets, including F-16s, and contains a factory that makes aircraft and other weapons systems.

The weapons development and the presence of jets that could be used to deploy nuclear bombs have raised suspicions among some experts that the base is linked to Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. However, no firm evidence has emerged, since the secrecy of the nuclear program makes independent evaluation difficult. The Pakistani military denies any connection between the base and the program.

The safety of the country's nuclear weapons has been a major concern for the United States. Western experts say Pakistan has about 100 nuclear weapons and is expanding its arsenal.

"The great danger we've always feared is that if terrorism is not controlled in their country, that those nuclear weapons could fall into the wrong hands," U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Pentagon reporters Tuesday.

But many experts argue that the possibility of militants being able to battle their way inside a Pakistani facility and make out with a nuclear weapon or parts is extremely remote.

"There's a lot of talk about the loose nukes and the security of the Pakistani nukes but this isn't something that the Pakistani state is going to take lightly. This is one of their most prized possessions," Kamran Bokhari, from the global intelligence firm, Stratfor.

The Pakistani Taliban and its allies have waged a bloody insurgency against the government that has killed over 30,000 people. The military says its forces are stretched think battling the group — one reason, it says, it has not been able to do more against other militants in the country, particularly those attacking U.S. and NATO forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

The Pakistani military has told the U.S. it plans to launch an offensive for the first time in North Waziristan, a militant stronghold on the border with Afghanistan. The campaign will aim to uproot the Pakistani Taliban but is expected to avoid tackling other militants involved in the Afghan war.

Thursday's attack came at around 2 a.m., when Taliban militants opened a barrage of automatic weapons fire and rocket-propelled grenades at the base, according to the air force. Some of them were also wearing explosives strapped to their bodies, it said.

At least one of the rockets hit a hangar and damaged one of the aircraft parked inside, said air force spokesman Tariq Mahmood.

The attackers then scaled the wall surrounding the air base and an intense firefight ensued.

.US drone kills six militants in Pakistan: officials

By Hasbanullah Khan | AFP – 5 hrs ago. 18 August 2012 .................

A US drone attack Saturday killed at least six militants in a remote Pakistani tribal town near the Afghan border as local people celebrated the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, security officials said.

The attack was the first since Pakistan's spymaster, Lieutenant General Zaheer ul-Islam, held talks with his CIA counterpart in Washington earlier this month in which drone strikes were said to have been discussed.

The drone fired two missiles on a compound in Shuwedar village in Shawal district of the troubled North Waziristan region, considered a stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants.

"US drones fired two missiles into a militant compound. Six bodies have been recovered from the compound so far," a security official told AFP.

Residents and local intelligence officials confirmed the attack and the casualties. The missiles also destroyed a car parked at the compound, they said.

It was the third drone attack since the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. It was not immediately clear if the missiles targeted any senior militant leader.

.Down's Syndrome Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy

AFP – 4 hrs ago. 19 August 2012 .............................

A Christian girl with Down's Syndrome has been arrested on blasphemy charges in Pakistan, accused of burning pages inscribed with verses from the Koran, police and activists said on Sunday.

Police arrested Rimsha, who is recognised by a single name, on Thursday after she was reported holding in public burnt pages which had Islamic text and Koranic verses on them, a police official told AFP.

A conviction for blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan.

The official said that the girl, who he described as being in her teens, was taken to a police station in the capital Islamabad, where she has been detained since.

Angry Muslim protesters held rallies demanding she be punished, said the official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

"We had to register the case fairly quickly to prevent any unpleasant situation," he added, referring to the demonstrations.

Rimsha was produced before a court on Friday and remanded in custody for 14 days, another police official said. She is expected to go before the court again by end of this month.

The girl's plight is likely to reignite debate about growing religious intolerance in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where strict anti-blasphemy laws make defaming Islam or the Prophet Mohammed, or desecrating the Koran, a capital offence.

Human rights activists say the law is often used to settle petty disputes, but in the face of huge public support for the legislation, the government says it has no plans to change it.

The girl's alleged behaviour sparked Muslim anger in Mehrabad, an area of the capital where she lives with her parents and where up to 800 Christians reside. Christians there were forced to leave amid mounting fury.

"These Christians had sought shelter with their relatives in other parts of the city but now they are gradually returning to Mehrabad," a senior official of All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA), Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, told AFP.

If it were me I would leave this damned country A.S.A.P. as sooner or later Pakistan is going to go Islamic, just wait and see if I am wrong.

He said that the girl had Down's Syndrome -- a condition which causes various degrees of learning difficulties -- and disputed the age given by police.

"She was just 11 to 12 years old," he said, adding it was a hugely sensitive issue and "we would not like it to be mishandled and would rather want to resolve it amicably".

Women's Action Forum (WAF), a leading Pakistani organisation fighting for the rights of women, condemned Rimsha's arrest.

"WAF is outraged at the total inhumanity of the men who lodged the First Information Report (FIR) in the police," WAF spokeswoman Tahira Abdullah said, demanding Rimsha's immediate release.

Police should have dealt with the case under the Juvenile Justice System and not the serious allegation of blasphemy, she said, accusing police of not allowing lawyers or civil society representatives to visit the girl in custody.
