Angry Military women report they are being denied access to birth control

A friend just posted this info and captioned it Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. The headline says it all.

Quote:
A startling new survey found that 26% of active-duty women are unable to access birth control while deployed.
Some said their doctors denied birth control based on general orders that limit deployed troops’ sexual activity.
Ellen Haring, the chief executive of the advocacy group that conducted the study, said this is “ridiculous,” noting birth control is not solely used for contraception.
A Defense Department spokeswoman acknowledged it would be a privacy violation to deny birth control for this reason, but stopped short of saying whether the military would investigate or issue guidance to correct it.

Military leaders say that General Order 1, which limits alcohol consumption and cohabitation for troops deployed to war zones, reinforces good order and discipline. Advocates and troops say it’s an antiquated “ban on sex” – and may in reality be harming women’s health.

Women troops said in some cases that their doctors cited this controversial order to deny them access to birth control while deployed, a fact that was revealed in a survey conducted by the Service Women’s Action Network advocacy group.

In their survey of nearly 800 women serving or who have served in the US military, SWAN found that 26% of active-duty women do not have access to birth control while deployed. That number jumps even higher for other communities: 41% of women veterans reported limited access during their time in uniform.

While several reasons were provided to account for these numbers, including the inability to refill prescriptions far enough in advance, advocates were shocked to find that a limitation on sexual activity would be used to deny access to birth control.

“Isn’t that ridiculous,” Ellen Haring, chief executive of SWAN, told Business Insider. “It astounds me that people would be denied for that reason.”

It’s astounding, Haring said, because birth control is not just used as a contraceptive.

I agree with the Military. It should not meddle or contribute to the sexual wants and desires of its members. If you're active duty, refrain from anything that could put a block on your military performance. Or take care of it on your own dime. When I was active duty, the only thing I saw were prophylactics.

I do believe that there are instances where a doctor will prescribe certain contraceptives for health reasons other than birth control. If that is truly the case (I am not a doctor, so I will not pretend to know), then the military should examine this policy for those troops that are deployed. If we are talking about state side deployments where those troops have access to those contraceptives, then I feel it is not the business of the military, and by extension the Federal Government, to subsidize any persons sexual activity.

"denying access" is a bullsh*t term...

Everyone has "access" to their local pharmacy BEFORE they go to foreign lands...Nothing is stopping them from stocking up and taking the stuff with them...

I did some research and learned that the military provides Viagra not only to veterans, but to ACTIVE DUTY soldiers. Denying women birth control while offering Viagra to active duty men is a clear case of discrimination.

As opposing factions fought it out on social media, one statistic gained more traction than any other: the curious detail that the Pentagon spends around $84 million a year making sure its hard men of war stay, well, hard.

According to the Military Times, U.S. military expenditure on ED medication, such as Viagra and Cialis, for veterans and active-service troops is approximately 10 times higher than its spending on sex reassignment surgery ($2.4 million-$8.4 million, according to figures published by Rand Corp.) and related care for active-duty transgender service members.

I'm not pro special rights for transgenders, but used this source since it is from Newsweek and not just someone's blog.

Now that you've learned that the military will encourage active duty men's erections yet some military doctors refuse to prescribe birth control pills to active duty women, do the people here who have claimed this is fine still think this is fair?

I take a life saving drug but a doctor will only write me three months. once I pressured an intern to write it for 6 months.

I agree. I think the military should prescribe Viagra to women also. No birth control for men or women.

Just kidding. I think the policy or guidelines or regulations need to be looked at closely.

Kind of a startling point of obvious discrimination here. Thanks

I did not see in mentioned but Birth Control medications are frequently use to regulate menstruation cycling. So, the stuff should be available even in combat situations.

As for controlling "urges" let me say this. We de-humanize our troops enough so they can do their job. Removing this (sex) from their choice of "activities" seems more than unfair. Promoting risky sex, at the very least, seems reckless .
