Default North Korea’s Provocative Missile Ploy Threatens the U.S.—and Trump. Will He Go Balli

Commercial satellite imagery shows North Korea is operating at least 13 and perhaps as many as 20 undeclared “missile operating bases.
Quote:
The existence of the bases, disclosed by a report issued Monday by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, undercuts the efforts of President Donald Trump and South Korea’s leader, Moon Jae-in, to establish ties with Kim Jong Un, the North Korean despot.
Quote:
Instead of giving up missiles, the report shows North Korea is making progress developing them. “It’s not like these bases have been frozen,” Victor Cha, one the report’s three authors, told The New York Times. “Work is continuing.”
Quote:
The bases, which house ballistic missiles carried by mobile launchers, are of special interest to U.S. military planners. These mobile missiles can hide until an hour or so before launch, thereby decreasing the probability they will be destroyed on the ground. Missiles launched from the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, which Kim in June promised to dismantle, are vulnerable for days as they sit exposed on the pad.
Quote:
David Maxwell, who served five tours of duty on the Korean Peninsula with the U.S. Army and is now at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, suggests it’s possible that we learned of the bases at this time because the North Koreans wanted us to see them. “They may be deliberately showing us this to put pressure on us to make concessions.”

Whether or not the North Koreans purposely showed their hand, the report certainly complicates Trump’s and Moon’s diplomatic efforts. As the Times noted, “The satellite images suggest that the North has been engaged in a great deception.”
we better make sure we have a base in South Korea and missiles in Poland.

The report was just made public, but this is something US Intelligence and the Trump Administration already knew about...

Trump says he knows about North Korea's hidden missile bases

Quote:
President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that his administration is aware of more than a dozen ballistic missile bases in North Korea, labeling a New York Times report on those sites "inaccurate" and "more fake news."

"The story in the New York Times concerning North Korea developing missile bases is inaccurate," Trump wrote on Twitter. "We fully know about the sites being discussed, nothing new - and nothing happening out of the normal. Just more Fake News. I will be the first to let you know if things go bad!"

The New York Times reported Monday on satellite images revealing 16 hidden ballistic missile bases in North Korea that the newspaper wrote were "long known to American intelligence agencies but left undiscussed as President Trump claims to have neutralized the North's nuclear threat." The Times reported that Pyongyang has continued to make improvements at the 16 hidden sites even as it has offered to dismantle a ballistic missile launch site amid ongoing denuclearization talks with the U.S.

So he lied again to the American people. so why is he wanting base closures in key areas of the world that defend against NK and their buddy Putin?

As much as I hate to admit it, I think that President Trump may be engaging in some wishful thinking as regarding North Korea (and Russia, too).

Understandably enough, he wishes to defuse the threat of nuclear war that hung over us not very long ago.

But appeasement, unfortunately, is not a very good strategy.

Note: I just wish that Democrats had engaged in as much teeth gnashing during the Obama years, with regard to this matter, as they are doing now. But they seem to think that appeasement is okay if the person in the White House has a "D" next to his name...

It would really be better, I think, if you did not get personal; but merely stated, straightforwardly, your policy differences with the man. (Yes, sometimes President Trump can be guilty of this same thing; and when he is, he should be called out, as regarding it. But two wrongs still do not make one right.)

One of the most egregious examples did not even involve North Korea or Russia. Instead, it had to do with Syria and Bashar al-Assad.

In August of 2012, then-President Obama declared that it would amount to a "red line" if Assad were seen to be guilty of using chemical weapons against his citizens. But then, of course, Obama ignored his own "red line."

Another example is the JCPOA (repealed, thankfully, by Donald Trump). As The Hill (a non-partisan newspaper) puts it: "The Iran nuclear-arms deal in 2015 was the apex of Obama's appeasement approach. Beyond merely setting loose terms of agreement and ignoring Iran's human rights abuses, the administration also lifted sanctions on Iran, allowing hundreds of billions of dollars to flow back to the regime. Much of this money has gone to the regime's terror army, whose soldiers are currently gunning down pro-democracy protesters in the streets. ...Thankfully, the current administration recognizes that this policy of appeasement has failed and is proactively working to reverse the policies of President Obama."
