Default US Military to Launch Hypersonic Rocket Plane by 2016

some of these black projects are amazing and very costly to say the least. And at the site within this news release are plenty of links.

.US Military to Launch Hypersonic Rocket Plane by 2016

By SPACE.com Staff | SPACE.com – Wed, Jul 11, 2012. Posted 12 July 2012 ....

The U.S. military aims to fly a full-scale rocket plane at 20 times the speed of sound by 2016, officials announced last week.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, laid out its plan to develop and test-fly the hypersonic vehicle in a press release issued Friday (July 6). The so-called X-plane would travel at Mach 20 — roughly 13,000 mph (20,900 kph) — allowing the military to reach any spot on the globe in less than an hour.

Further, the vehicle would be "recoverable," according to the release — meaning the government could get it back.

To help make all this happen, DARPA has started up a new program called Integrated Hypersonics. IH will build off previous Defense Department research into ultra-fast flight but will need to make some major strides of its own, officials said. [NASA's Vision of Future Air Travel (Gallery)]

Translation, it is going to start costing a heck of a lot more...

"We do not yet have a complete hypersonic system solution," said Gregory Hulcher, director of strategic warfare at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, in a statement. "Programs like Integrated Hypersonics will leverage previous investments in this field and continue to reduce risk, inform development and advance capabilities."

The Integrated Hypersonics program will focus primarily on five areas: thermal protection; aerodynamics; guidance, navigation and control (GNC); range/instrumentation; and propulsion.

Thermal protection systems are a key requirement for hypersonic flight, which is traditionally defined as anything above Mach 5. Vehicles zooming through the atmosphere at Mach 20 experience temperatures in excess of 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,927 degrees Celsius), DARPA officials said — hot enough to melt stainless steel.

Desired advances in aerodynamics and GNC technology will allow the X-plane to make real-time, in-flight adjustments to account for changing conditions — such as wind gusts — and let it glide safely to its destination.

I would love to know just what this X-craft is and what purpose it has to our defense?

As far as propulsion goes, IH won't simply adapt an existing rocket designed for space missions. Rather, DARPA is working on a new launch vehicle that would insert the X-plane into its desired trajectory, officials said. The hypersonic vehicle would also have its own integrated rocket to give it a boost during flight, they added.

Yepa heck of a lot more money is going to be needed, and I am sure it might be worth it if this X-craft can do more than glide after it gets to where ever in an hour.

DARPA has had an active hypersonics research program for years. For example, the agency has conducted two flight tests of a prototype rocket-launched glider, called the Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2), in the last two years.

In the more recent test, launched in August 2011, HTV-2 reached Mach 20 but stayed aloft for only nine minutes. HTV-2 is part of the advanced Conventional Prompt Global Strike weapons program, which aims to develop a bomber capable of reaching any target on Earth within an hour.

Just what the AF needs a bomber that strikes from what allitude, how fast and must need a newer bomb site or if the worst did happen it won't get off the ground if our GPS is hit by enemies.

And then we need newer craft to get boot on the ground cause like it or not the AF still needs troopers from the Army & Marines to hold any area worth taking over.
Yet the AF has always wanted to win Wars alone so this might not need newer craft after all.

Any one have thoughts on this or this report?

Boeing designing Hypersonic Space Plane for DARPA...

Hypersonic Space Plane May Soon Be a Reality
May 25, 2017 - The next generation hypersonic space plane just took a big step toward reality as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced Boeing will “complete advanced design work” for the Experimental Spaceplane, XS-1.
Quote:
The goal of the project is to offer quicker access to low Earth orbit, decreasing the preparation time to launch from months to days. For example, in the case of the loss of a military or commercial satellite, the unmanned, reusable XS-1 could quickly be used to launch a replacement. “The XS-1 would be neither a traditional airplane nor a conventional launch vehicle, but rather a combination of the two, with the goal of lowering launch costs by a factor of 10 and replacing today’s frustratingly long wait time with launch on demand,” said Jess Sponable, DARPA program manager.

DARPA’s Experimental Spaceplane (XS-1) program seeks to build and fly the first of an entirely new class of hypersonic aircraft that would break the cycle of escalating launch costs and make possible a host of critical national security options. (DARPA)

According to DARPA, the XS-1 will be about the size of a business jet and take off vertically, propelled not by external boosters but by “self contained cryogenic propellants.” After reaching a suborbital altitude, the plane would launch an expendable upper stage that would be able to push a satellite into orbit. The plane would then return to Earth, landing like a plane.

DARPA said the plane could then be reused “potentially within hours.” The XS-1 could fly as fast as Mach 10, DARPA said. The XS-1 is still years away from reality, with DARPA saying testing the plane’s engines on the ground slated for 2019.

It is just weird to think most of our enemies ride donkeies and shoot AK47's.

And a damn shame as so many men with nothing to do and no future to be seen "worth a tick on the butt of the donkey" is why so many keep joining these terror groups.

Also I read where this space plane came back to earth a few weeks ago after being in space for a year or so.
