Quote:
Ronald Reagan claimed that the Russian language had no word for "freedom." (The word is "svoboda"; it's quite well attested in Russian literature.)
Quote:
... said that intercontinental ballistic missiles (not that there are any non-ballistic missiles—a corruption of language that isn't his fault) could be recalled once launched.
:scary

Quote:
Ronald Reagan said that he sought a "Star Wars" defense only in order to share the technology with the tyrants of the U.S.S.R. Ronald Reagan professed to be annoyed when people called it "Star Wars," even though he had ended his speech on the subject with the lame quip, "May the force be with you."
Quote:
Alarmed his Soviet counterparts by saying that surely they'd both unite against an invasion from Mars... alarmed other constituencies by speaking freely about the "End Times" foreshadowed in the Bible.
Quote:
In the Oval Office, Ronald Reagan told Yitzhak Shamir and Simon Wiesenthal, on two separate occasions, that he himself had assisted personally at the liberation of the Nazi death camps
I think I saw that movie... was he even in it

Quote:
But there was more to Ronald Reagan than that. He announced that apartheid South Africa had "stood beside us in every war we've ever fought," when the South African leadership had been on the other side in the most recent world war.
Quote:
Allowed Alexander Haig to greenlight the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, fired him when that went too far and led to mayhem in Beirut, then ran away from Lebanon altogether when the Marine barracks were bombed, and then unbelievably accused Tip O'Neill and the Democrats of "scuttling."
Quote:
Ronald Reagan sold heavy weapons to the Iranian mullahs and lied about it, saying that all the weapons he hadn't sold them (and hadn't traded for hostages in any case) would, all the same, have fit on a small truck.
Quote:
He then diverted the profits of this criminal trade to an illegal war in Nicaragua and lied unceasingly about that, too.
Quote:
Reagan then modestly let his underlings maintain that he was too dense to understand the connection between the two impeachable crimes.
Quote:
He then switched without any apparent strain to a policy of backing Saddam Hussein against Iran. (If Margaret Thatcher's intelligence services had not bugged Oliver North in London and become infuriated because all European nations were boycotting Iran at Reagan's request, we might still not know about this.)
Quote:
One could go on. I only saw him once up close, which happened to be when he got a question he didn't like. Was it true that his staff in the 1980 debates had stolen President Carter's briefing book? (They had.) The famously genial grin turned into a rictus of senile fury: I was looking at a cruel and stupid lizard.
Quote:
His reply was that maybe his staff had, and maybe they hadn't, but what about the leak of the Pentagon Papers? Thus, a secret theft of presidential documents was equated with the public disclosure of needful information. This was a man never short of a cheap jibe or the sort of falsehood that would, however laughable, buy him some time.

Here's more if you want to alternate between laughing and cringing for awhile. I really enjoyed the lizard part.

Not more than a week ago redd posted something aimed at threads that were just posted to inflame or antagonize the other side saying such posts would not be tolerated. I see salty thinks she is above the rules here.

Besides what would you have to be inflamed about? This is historical fact.
When arguments are made on the fuzzy math that Regan was some icon, I want the truth refreshed.

Reagan doesn't have anything on Bush. But I don't know what relevance it has to today.

The irony and hypocrisy in this post.........is almost too much to believe.

Go take a look at how many threads you've started, for the sole purpose of denigrating Obama and Dem's.

Ignoring the obvious hypocrisy, it's not a big surprise that your knee-jerk reaction is.........

The line between trying to post something to start a discussion and something to antagonize the other side is rather hard to determine.

There have been plenty of threads started by right-wingers here that could potentially fall into the same category.

There's no point in a political forum where the only subjects posted on are extra-safe.

Much of the policy of that administration affects us. FDR is often vilified. I see no sense in holding back any longer on the truth and nothing but.
We were like kids watching an indiscriminate shooter on a ferris wheel. No one knew what was fair game next. The safety of food, and the skies over our heads.
The first ex President in my recollection of history to take even expense money for giving a speech. We set up a fund for ex presidents after the great US Grant was found living in genteel poverty having sold off almost all his mother's furniture. This protects American assets through a moral code. Presidents don't take bribes for their presence or speeches. But this man did (2 mil from the Japanese was only the beginning).
So many things of that era set the tone for the nation and the future and we must resist this snotty nostalgia for a man who never was.
