But the title wasn't suited for News On Iraq.. So if you have any please post it in this thread. Or not.

Speaking for myself I don't like to look past 2-3 pages to find what I'm looking for when I have been posting in it for a while. But thats me.

This title doesn't cover all that is going on in Iraq

..Al-Qaida claims attack on Iraq security HQ

By SAMEER N. YACOUB | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago.. 13 August 2012 .........

BAGHDAD (AP) — Al-Qaida's branch in Iraq claimed responsibility Monday for a double bombing that targeted a counterterrorism unit in Baghdad last month.

The al-Qaida statement claimed 70 people were killed in the July 31 attack on the security headquarters. Government and security officials put the death toll for all the violence that hit the capital that day at 21.

In a statement posted Monday on a militant website, the Islamic State of Iraq, al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, said a group of "believers from the Sunni people" attacked a unit that is part of the pro-Iranian forces in the country. Iran is a regional Shiite powerhouse.

The militant group also claimed responsibility for 27 shootings and other attacks on government and security officials from June 17 until July 20.

Also Monday, gunmen with silenced pistols shot dead three policemen at a checkpoint in Sadiyah neighborhood in western Baghdad, a police official said.

A medic at a nearby hospital confirmed the death toll. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters.

Security forces and government offices are top targets for insurgents seeking to undermine the Shiite-led Iraqi government's authority.

Al-Qaida's local wing has for years had a hot-and-cold relationship with the global terror network's leadership.

Both shared the goal of targeting the U.S. military in Iraq and, to an extent, undermining the Shiite government that replaced Saddam Hussein's regime. But al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri distanced themselves from the Iraqi militants in 2007 for also killing Iraqi civilians instead of focusing on Western targets.

Generally, al-Qaida in Iraq does not launch attacks or otherwise operate beyond Iraq's borders. But in early 2012, al-Zawahri urged Iraqi insurgents to support the Sunni-based uprising in neighboring Syria against President Bashar Assad, an Alawite. The sect is a branch of Shiite Islam.

This and a few other news report listed below... Iraq isn't going to last under this continuing pressure IMHO.

My thinking is it will become the next Islamic Nation. Which means our blood, money and pain was for not. And the same BS is going to happen in Afghan once we leave. Yet this to is just IMHO.

.Wave of attacks in northern, central Iraq kill 37

By By SINAN SALAHEDDIN and ADAM SCHRECK | Associated Press – 2 hrs 37 mins ago.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Insurgents in Iraq unleashed a wave of attacks from before dawn until late in the evening Thursday, killing 37 people and wounding dozens, the latest in a series of persistent strikes aimed at undermining the government's authority.

The bomb and shooting attacks made for the country's deadliest day in more than three weeks, rattling nerves as families prepared to gather for a holiday weekend. More than 130 people have been killed in violence across the country since the start of August, showing that insurgents led by al-Qaida's Iraqi franchise remain a lethal force eight months after the last U.S. troops left the country.

Three of the attacks accounted for more than half of the casualties.

A morning car bomb in Baghdad's northeastern and mostly Shiite neighborhood of Husseiniyah killed seven people and wounded 31.

Around midday, another car bomb struck near the headquarters of local security forces in the northern city of Daqouq. As police rushed to the scene, a roadside bomb exploded, killing seven policemen. Another 35 people were hurt, police said.

Then, shortly before sunset, gunmen in cars opened fire on an Iraqi army checkpoint near the town of Mishada, killing seven soldiers and wounding eight. Mishada is 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Baghdad.

Iraqi officials are tightening security ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan this weekend. Authorities are seeking to thwart a possible upsurge in violence as crowds gather in public places such as parks, shrines and mosques to mark the occasion.

"Our security forces have received intelligence that terrorist groups are planning and preparing for attacks during and after Eid," said Abdul-Karim Tharib, head of the Baghdad provincial council security committee. "We ... have taken all necessary measures to foil any terrorist activities during Eid."

..Gunmen raid homes, kill 6 people in northern Iraq

By SAMEER N. YACOUB | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago.. 18 August 2012.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Gunmen killed six people in Iraq on Saturday, raiding two homes in a northern city in yet another bout of violence to strike the country in what has become a particularly bloody month.

Provincial police officials described the slayings in Mosul as "terrorist attacks." They are still investigating why gunmen stormed the houses, killing a husband and wife and two others in the first attack, and two men in the second house.

Attacks have picked up in recent weeks, with nearly 200 people killed since the start of August. On Thursday, a relentless assault across the country killed at least 93 people and wounded many more. It was the second deadliest day in Iraq since U.S. troops left in December.

Violence had fallen since its height between 2005 and 2008, but killings remain common. Al-Qaida's Iraqi branch says it intends to take back areas it once held before the U.S. and its local allies pushed it out.

Why does this appear in about every news release? Thats was then and now

A morgue official confirmed the casualties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information to reporters.

Mosul was once an al-Qaida stronghold. It is about 360 kilometers (225 miles) north of Baghdad.

Also Saturday, an Iranian exile group said it plans to move 400 residents from a camp in northern Iraq to a refugee camp on Baghdad's outskirts.

The group, the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, has already moved about 2,000 of its residents from Camp Ashraf in northern Iraq to Camp Hurriya, a former U.S. military base. It ignored a July 20 deadline to move the remaining 1,200 members, saying they want proof of better facilities and improvements at the base.

Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the group, also known by the Farsi name Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, said the convoy of 400 residents would leave Aug. 23 "as a gesture of goodwill."

The group seeks the overthrow of Iran's clerical rulers. It carried out bombings and assassinations in Iran in the 1980s, but says it renounced violence in 2001.

Iraq considers the exiles a terrorist group. The United Nations helped broker a deal to close Ashraf and temporarily move the exiles into the refugee camp, though Iraqi and U.N. officials want the exiles to eventually be resettled outside Iraq.

The U.N. envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, welcomed plans for the move next week and urged remaining Ashraf residents to prepare to relocate to Hurriya as well.

Associated Press writer Adam Schreck contributed reporting.

.Iraqi Sunni cleric's convoy struck by bomb

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN | Associated Press – 1 hr 5 mins ago. 19 Aug. 2012

BAGHDAD (AP) — A bomb struck the convoy of a senior Sunni cleric in western Baghdad on Sunday, killing four and critically wounding the anti-extremist Muslim leader, police said.

The attack highlights the threats faced by relatively moderate Sunni clerics whom the Shiite-led government needs to help rebuild the country and establish security. It follows a series of assaults in what is becoming an increasingly bloody month.

The blast in the capital's Yarmouk neighborhood left Sheik Mahdi al-Sumaidaie badly hurt, a Sunni religious official said. The cleric had just finished leading prayers at a nearby mosque to mark the beginning of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which follows the holy month of Ramadan.

Al-Sumaidaie has sided with the government against Sunni extremists. Earlier this year, he called for a unified religious authority to bridge the gap between Iraq's Sunnis and Shiites. Insurgents often target Sunni clerics seen as working closely with the Shiite-led government.

Two police officers and a hospital official confirmed the attack. They said four of the cleric's bodyguards were killed and three others were wounded.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki condemned the attack. In a statement posted on his website, the Shiite leader said the attack was aimed at "spreading sedition and silencing any patriotic moderate voice."

"Even as we condemn this ugly crime, we are confident that our people are aware of the evil goals of such schemes," he said.

Al-Sumaidaie was one of the Sunni religious leaders who called on followers to fight U.S.-led forces after the 2003 invasion. He established a conservative Salafi group based in one of the mosques on Baghdad's Sunni-dominated western side.

After U.S. troops left, his group was among those who laid down their weapons and sided with the government against Sunni extremists. Since then, he has urged followers to support the government for the sake of security and to help rebuild the country.

Violence fueled by sectarian differences has declined in Iraq since its height between 2005 and 2008, though deadly attacks continue to occur almost daily and have picked up in recent weeks. About 200 people have been killed since the start of August.

On Thursday, a relentless assault across the country killed at least 93 people and wounded many more. It was the second deadliest day in Iraq since U.S. troops left in December. No group has claimed responsibility for that wave of killings, but it bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida's Iraqi branch.

The local al-Qaida franchise, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, has vowed to make a comeback in areas it once held before the U.S. and its local allies pushed it out.

.Iraqis wait to see gains from country's oil boom

By ADAM SCHRECK | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago. 20 August 2012 .........

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq is fast becoming an oil producing powerhouse, but you'd never know that by looking at the faded Unknown Soldier gas station in downtown Baghdad. There's no repair garage or mini-mart, just a cramped office with tattered vinyl couches. Horns blare as a string of waiting cars backs up into busy Sadoun Street, slowing traffic.

Electricity from the power grid is available only for a few hours a day, so a noisy generator burns through 200 liters (53 gallons) of fuel daily just to keep the lights on and pumps running. That eats into what little profit is left over after government-imposed price caps, says manager Anmar Abdul-Sattar.

Like many Iraqis, he sees little reason to celebrate the postwar petroleum gains that have turned Iraq into a leading oil producer. "The country is increasing its oil revenues, but we're not feeling it on the ground," he said.

And that leads to what? the Iraq Govt.

It's a widely shared sentiment. Frequent power cuts, the state's inability to prevent near-daily bloodshed and yawning gaps in basic services have left ordinary Iraqis convinced they are sharing little in the country's growing oil wealth. Insurgent attacks have killed more than 200 people just since the start of this month.

"There is no electricity, no public services. No respect for the people of Iraq," Mohammed Salem said as he gassed up his taxi at the station, which is named after a monument that once stood nearby. The billions being made off Iraq's oil, Salem believes, are simply "being stolen by government officials and sent to banks outside of Iraq."

And if you think Afghan will be any different your not thinking. Cause we taught them what democracy is. And look to our govt. No look harder!

Iraq last month crept into second place behind Saudi Arabia among OPEC's top oil exporters,

Mortar fire targeting Shiites kills 3 in Iraq

By SAMEER N. YACOUB | Associated Press – 7 hrs ago. 24 August 2012 .......

BAGHDAD (AP) — A mortar attack targeting Shiite worshippers killed three people in eastern Baghdad on Friday, and authorities were investigating whether attackers set off explosions that sparked an early morning fire at a nightclub that left six dead.

Friday's violence was the first in Iraq after several days of calm during the three-day holiday earlier this week marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Before the Eid al-Fitr holiday, more than 200 people were killed in August violence across the country.

In the mortar attack, police said an explosive shell landed near a mosque shortly after the start of Friday prayers in the Shiite district of Sadr City. The sermon there was delivered by a backer of the Shiite firebrand cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Eight people were wounded, including the preacher, Nassir al-Saadi.

Sunni insurgents frequently attack Shiites in an attempt to revive sectarian fighting and undermine the Shiite-dominated government.

In a separate incident, two police officers said attackers set off a bomb and then threw grenades from a speeding car at the Qasr al-Sharq, or "Palace of the East," hotel in Baghdad's downtown Karradah district early Friday. The hotel includes a hall that witnesses say is used as a nightclub.

Six people died and 12 were injured when a fire erupted inside the entryway of the hotel.

.Three killed in north Iraq attacks

AFP – 9 hrs ago. 25 August 2012 ..................

Separate shootings in Iraq's main northern city of Mosul on Saturday left three people dead, including a local councillor, security and medical officials said.

In one attack, gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint in Mosul, 350 kilometres (220 miles) from Baghdad, killing a policeman and a civilian, said police First Lieutenant Mohammed al-Juburi and Dr Mahmud Haddad at Mosul General Hospital.

In another incident, city councillor Ibrahim Yunis was gunned down outside his home in southeastern Mosul, according to Juburi and Khaled al-Rifaie, a doctor at the hospital's morgue.

Security and medical officials also reported four Iraqi soldiers, including a colonel, were wounded in a gun attack on their patrol near the town of Dhuluiyah, north of Baghdad, on Friday evening.

The unrest takes to 246 the number of people killed in attacks nationwide this month, according to an AFP tally based on reports from security and medical officials.

Violence in Iraq is markedly lower than its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common, especially in Baghdad and Mosul.
