Superbug kills 7th person at Md. NIH hospital

Associated Press
Sep. 15, 2012 1:49PM PDT. Posted 17 Sept. 2012 ............

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — A deadly germ untreatable by most antibiotics has killed a seventh person at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Maryland.

The Washington Post (NIH superbug claims 7th victim - The Washington Post) reported the death Friday. NIH officials told the paper that the boy from Minnesota died Sept. 7. NIH says the boy arrived at the research hospital in Bethesda in April and was being treated for complications from a bone marrow transplant when he contracted the bug.

He was the 19th patient at the hospital to contract an antibiotic-resistant strain of KPC, or Klebsiella pneumoniae. The outbreak stemmed from a single patient carrying the superbug who arrived at the hospital last summer.

The paper reported the Minnesota boy's case marked the first new infection of this superbug at NIH since January.

Well this seasons flu virus has killed a lot of people in many of the states where it has rose it's ugly head. And thats is all of the states. Asm it is much worst this season.

And when I go out people just don't seem aware.

At this site is a lot more data. Plus I am posting the search page. This is from the very top.

Quote:
Flu Strain Information

Influenza, or commonly called flu, is a respiratory illness caused by a specific flu strain of the flu virus. There are various types of flu virus that are known.
These are classified as type A, B and C. Type A and B are known to cause severe respiratory symptoms like fever, fatigue, headache, runny nose and congestion.
These types can lead to epidemics since they are extremely infectious and can travel from one person to another by direct contact, sneezing and coughing. Type C causes relatively milder symptoms and almost always never becomes an epidemic. Each of these flu viruses can mutate and therefore they keep changing making permanent vaccines impossible.

Different influenza types are caused by different flu strain viruses that may exist. Even though there are three main types of flu virus that are known, type A has been further subdivided into sub types based on the two proteins that appear on the surface of the virus. These proteins are called the hemagglutinin (H) and the neuraminidase (N). The 12 known H subtypes and 9 known N sub types can combine in various ways to create different influenza types that can affect humans.

The best way to ensure prevention against any of the influenza viruses caused by different flu viruses is to get vaccinated for them. However the issue arises due to the constant mutations that these viruses undergo. The mutations ensure that the virus does not remain the same and modifies in such a manner that the natural or acquired immunity against the previous flu strain is no longer effective.

While pandemics like the swine flu pandemic occur infrequently, the seasonal flu outbreak occurs each year. It is possible to try and avoid the seasonal flu outbreak that affects anywhere from 5 percent to 20 percent Americans each year by avoiding sneezing and coughing people or being extremely particular about personal hygiene. However, such avoidance is not practical and it is, in fact, better to protect yourself by taking influenza shots each year. In most cases the seasonal flu vaccine contains a mix of different strains of flu viruses to ensure protection against a variety of strains.

In most cases, the fever, headache and cold that results from infection form the seasonal flu virus reduce in a few days and only symptomatic treatment is required. However, if the symptoms worsen and adequate care is not taken the complications can include pneumonia, lung collapse, breathing difficulties and more. Antiviral medicines to control the spread of the virus, medication to keep the fever under control and adequate fluids to avoid dehydration are necessary. You should also keep a check on the different flu strain virus vaccine that are developed so that new mutations can also be guarded against.

Some information for Key Facts About Seasonal Flu Vaccine and other ways of treatment can be found in your hospital. Ask your doctor now.

At the site these are on the right hand side.

So far I have notgotten the flu, even though my contractor who is also a friend of mine has it. And had it while we worked a few days ago on supporting my cross member under both bedrooms above the garage.

Part of the reason is I find I use a few of these items. I can't remember if I got my flu shot last year.

So check these out and use the info. Now some you already know about.

The Easiest, Cheapest Way to Stay Healthy

By Lisa Collier Cool

An easy action that takes just 20 seconds can cut your risk for catching a cold, flu or other contagious diseases by up to 51 percent, recent studies show. And if everyone made it a regular habit, one million deaths a year would be prevented, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which calls this habit the single most important way to avoid spreading infection.

Frequent hand washing with soap and water can save you money—and misery—by helping you avoid medical bills, missed workdays, or having to stay home with a sick child. And you’ll also protect your friends and family: A CDC survey found that 40 million Americans a year fall prey to illnesses spread by hands, which can harbor up to 500,000 bacteria per square centimeter.

The 11 Germiest Places in Your Home

Clean Hands Save Lives

Not only does lathering up protect you from respiratory illnesses like colds, but it also helps ward off more serious conditions, including hepatitis A, meningitis, and potentially life-threatening superbug infections, such as MRSA. Overall, 80 percent of all infectious diseases are spread by touch.

Here are just a few research findings that illustrate the protective power of clean hands:
•Kids who washed their hands four times a day had 25 percent fewer school absences due to contagious diseases and 57 percent fewer sick days due to GI bugs.
•When 40,000 Navy recruits were instructed to wash their hands five times a day, their rate of respiratory infections fell by 45 percent, according to a study published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
•A 2011 study found that when students disinfected their hands three times a day with ethanol gel sanitizer, there was a 66 percent drop in pupils who missed four or more days due to illness and a 20 percent rise in students with zero absences, compared to data from the previous year.
•Hand washing reduces risk for colds and other respiratory illnesses by 21 percent, according to the CDC.
•Washing with soap and water lowers risk for diarrhea and severe or fatal intestinal infections by up to 59 percent, a systematic review published in Lancet reported.

I can't imagine people not washing their hands after using the toilet. It doesn't make sense. Also I use a piece of paper towel or if none then my sleeve over my hand to open the main exit door of a public toilet after I have washed my hands because more than likely others haven't washed and therefore germs have multiplied on the door handle.

I also hear it is best to sneeze or cough into your elbow as often there is no time to get a tissue before a sneeze or cough.

You know sometimes I think we are looking at the big picture, as in terrorism, nuclear war, global warming etc., when most likely what will be the downfall of civilisation will be something like a superbug or flu pandemic.

We are in a flu pandemic right now, here in America, as hospitals turn away people and the anti toxin isn't enough in some places.

What causes a pandemic is FEAR... Once people start to die and about everyone else trys to play catch up. When they could have done the right thing before the flu season.

We have a Norovirus epidemic here. Thank goodness I haven't had it but one of my daughters had it a couple of weeks ago, but she was a couple of hundred miles away so I wasn't able to help her although her room-mates did. Norovirus is worse than just a simple gastric bug and people are really ill with it.

Here those people who have diabetes, immune deficiency, the elderly, etc., are allowed the flu injection free of charge from their family doctor. Or for something like twenty dollars they can pay for one in a drug store. Unless I am visiting my doctor on another matter I would prefer to pay in the shop. That way I am not sitting in a room with other patients with goodness knows what airborne germs in the atmosphere in the waiting room. At least in the shop it is less likely I will catch some bug as it will be better ventilated that a stuffy warm doctor's waiting room.

.New York governor declares public health emergency to combat flu

Reuters – 21 hrs ago.

(Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a public health emergency on Saturday, giving pharmacists permission to administer flu vaccinations to more people as officials seek to stem the worst flu outbreak in that state in several years.

Cuomo's order came a day after federal health officials said that fast-spreading influenza had officially reached epidemic proportions in the United States, following an early start.

Nine of the 10 U.S. regions had "elevated" flu activity last week, and 20 children across the country have died, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday.

In New York, the governor's office said 19,128 cases of influenza have been reported this season, compared with 4,404 positive laboratory tests reported for the entire 2011-2012 season.

"We are experiencing the worst flu season since at least 2009, and influenza activity in New York state is widespread, with cases reported in all 57 counties and all five boroughs of New York City," Cuomo said on Saturday.

As of January 5, the state health department had reports of 2,884 patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza, compared with 1,169 total hospitalizations in 2011.

Cuomo's executive order temporarily allows pharmacists to give flu shots to patients between ages 6 months to 18 years old. Typically, the state limits pharmacists to administering vaccinations only to people 18 and older.

The governor said he instructed state officials "to marshal all needed resources to address this public health emergency and remove all barriers to ensure that all New Yorkers - children and adults alike - have access to critically needed flu vaccines."

Cuomo urged residents who had not gotten a flu shot to do so, noting that influenza cases continued to rise in New York.

In Boston, Mayor Thomas Menino, facing 10 times more flu cases than last year, declared a public health emergency on Wednesday.

The severity of the flu season has forced hospitals in some states to turn away people arriving at the emergency rooms, tighten restrictions on visitors and open extra facilities to accommodate more patients.

Tens of thousands of Americans die every year from flu, even in non-epidemic years. The threshold for an epidemic is that it results in more than 7.2 percent of deaths, but so far there is no definitive count of the total caused by flu this year.
