Spike in West Nile Cases - Local News - Mobile, AL - NBCNews.com

Swine flu is not that big a deal in healthy individuals- not much different than regular flu, actually. Several of my family members had it a few years back; I don't know how I escaped it.

West Nile Virus scares the crud out of me, even though about 90% of infected individuals are completely asymptomatic, and only 1% have serious (as in, more than mild flu-like) symptoms.
It's rampant in my area right now (although even worse up north, in Dallas/Ft Worth), and it only scares me because I have a new baby this year, and he's very prone to mosquito bites, and too young to safely use insect repellent.

West Nile has hit Texas many summers in a row now, and many researchers believe that as many as 15-20% of Texans are now immune, having already been infected without knowing it.
But of course my new baby couldn't be immune yet, and so I worry.
On the bright side, West Nile very rarely effects small children severely. It presents the most serious risk to the elderly.
In Egypt, it is estimated that 25-30% of children under eight years old have antibodies to West Nile Virus- in other words, over a quarter of children there have previously been infected, yet child mortality from West Nile Virus is extremely uncommon.

.5 Things You Need to Know About West Nile Virus

By MyHealthNewsDaily Staff | LiveScience.com – 5 hrs ago. 18 Aug. 2012

In the wake of 10 deaths due to West Nile virus, and hundreds of infections, authorities in Texas are spraying insecticide in the Dallas region, hoping to curb the spread of the disease, which can spread by mosquitoes.

A total of 693 cases of West Nile virus infections, including 26 deaths, were reported as of Aug. 14 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The number of cases reported by this second week in August is the highest since 1999, when the disease was first seen in the U.S., according to the CDC.

About 60 percent of this year's cases have involved the "neuroinvasive" form of West Nile infection, in which the nervous system is affected. Such cases can cause inflammation of neural tissues, such as meningitis and encephalitis. More than 80 percent of all reported cases were from six states (Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Dakota and California), and almost half of all cases have been reported from Texas.

Here are five things you need to know about West Nile virus:

1. What is West Nile virus?

2. How does West Nile Virus spread?

3. What are the symptoms of a West Nile infection?

4. How can I prevent catching West Nile?

5. How is West Nile virus treated?

Top 7 Germs in Food that Make You Sick

Each year, one in six Americans get sick from contaminated food, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Recently, an outbreak of Salmonella in raw tuna sickened at least 200 people, and last year's outbreak of Listeria linked with cantalopes sickened 146 people and led to at least 30 deaths, according to the CDC.

You can reduce your risk of getting sick by knowing where germs are likely to be lurking.

Here are seven common culprits of food-borne disease, and how you can avoid them.

By The Associated Press

LAWRENCE — State health officials said 18 cases of the West Nile virus have been reported so far this year in Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said 11 of the cases have been reported in Sedgwick County, with the rest throughout the state.

State public health veterinarian Ingrid Garrison said health officials are expecting to see more cases because the peak time for the virus is August into September.

The virus is spread by mosquitoes. It causes only mild illness in most people. But in some cases it develops into a severe illness with permanent neurological effects.

The Lawrence Journal-World reported that Garrison said Kansas has had nine cases in the severe category.

My two cents (from a county which is having a West Nile Virus Epidemic but which- unlike the Dallas area- refuses to spray pesticide):
stay in at dusk and at dawn, if possible (especially at dusk).
That's the best way to avoid infection.
Only certain species of mosquito carry West Nile Virus, and these species are not usually active during the day. They are most active at twilight and at dawn, and they also like to fly into homes at these times, so keep the doors and windows shut at these times (especially if it's raining).

Note: I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on television.

Neither are our local newscasters who tell use the same things.

I know we did spray the last few years. But I guess by now our budget is already planned out.
