2 in 3 Americans are icky flu spewers As flu season kicks into high gear, survey shows we've all been 'that guy'

By Diane Mapes msnbc.com contributor updated 1/25/2011 8:34:13 AM ET :

When Adrienne Denaro got married three years ago, there was one wedding gift she could have lived without: the flu.
“My 12-year-old cousin was a junior bridesmaid and went around coughing on people while we were getting ready,” says Denaro, a 32-year-old copywriter from Miami. “She didn’t come across as feverish and sniffling and we didn’t think that her coughs were real. But they were. She had the flu and a week later, my new husband and I were sick as dogs.”
Denaro’s young cousin is an example of what the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases(NFID) would call “that guy.” You know, that person who shows up at work, school, a party or next to you on the bus spewing icky flu germs with little appreciation for the fact they’re infecting everyone around them

Swine influenza is an infection caused by a virus. It is named for a virus that pigs. People do not usually get the swine flu, but human infections can and do occur. The virus is contagious and can spread from person to person. The swine flu symptoms include fever, cough, headache, weakness and fatigue, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose.

Again it is happening well into the flu season. Why people don't get vaccinate is beyond me...

About every store in my town has wipes at the entrance to the stores. And Walgreens for the cost gives out the vaccinate as well as the Health Department and the VA for vets.

Flu cases increasing across state wwltv.com

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 2:49 PM

Updated today at 2:49 PM

BATON ROUGEFlu activity is spiking in the state with flu cases accounting for 20 percent of doctor visits, according to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

The amount of visits to the doctor attributed to influenza is up from 12 percent the week before.

Because of the increases, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is strongly encouraging all residents who haven’t already done so to protect themselves and their families by getting a seasonal flu vaccination. Each year, the flu kills more than 36,000 Americans.

It’s not too late to vaccinate,” said Dr. Frank Welch, director of the state’s immunization program.

“The flu shot only takes a few days to be effective, and people are usually protected completely within 7-to-10 days of getting the flu vaccine. Vaccines are the best preventive measure we have to help fight the spread of this illness, and we encourage everyone to get their seasonal flu shot to help protect not only themselves, but their families and friends as well.”

Well it is getting close to that time again for Flu Shots... In the news is some workers will be fired by the end of this day if they don't get them, as they work in a hospital.

You decide.. Plenty of news at the site so look it over.

Seasonal Influenza (Flu)

Key Facts About Seasonal Flu Vaccine

The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.

There are two types of vaccines:
•The “flu shot” — an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.

There are three different flu shots available: ◦a regular flu shot approved for people ages 6 months and older
◦a high-dose flu shot approved for people 65 and older, and
◦an intradermal flu shot approved for people 18 to 64 years of age.

•The nasal-spray flu vaccine — a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that is given as a nasal spray (sometimes called LAIV for “Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine”). The viruses in the nasal spray vaccine do not cause the flu. LAIV is approved for use in healthy* people 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant.

Seasonal flu vaccines protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. The viruses in the vaccine can change each year based on international surveillance and scientists’ estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in a given year. About 2 weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection against the influenza viruses in the vaccine develop in the body. Information specific to the 2011-2012 season, including the vaccine formulation, can be found at 2011-2012 Flu Season.

When to Get Vaccinated

CDC recommends that people get their seasonal flu vaccine as soon as vaccine becomes available in their community. Vaccination before December is best since this timing ensures that protective antibodies are in place before flu activity is typically at its highest. CDC continues to encourage people to get vaccinated throughout the flu season, which can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Over the course of the flu season, many different influenza viruses can circulate at different times and in different places. As long as flu viruses are still spreading in the community, vaccination can provide protective benefit.

New Seal Flu Could Pose Threat to Humans

HealthDay
Jul. 31, 2012 6:05AM PDT

TUESDAY, July 31 (HealthDay News) -- A new influenza strain found in New England harbor seals could potentially threaten people as well as wildlife, new research suggests.

Scientists cautioned that viruses like the newly discovered seal flu must be monitored in order to predict new strains and prevent a pandemic flu emerging from animals.

The report was published online July 31 in mBio.

"There is a concern that we have a new mammalian-transmissible virus to which humans haven't been exposed yet. It's a combination we haven't seen in disease before," report editor Dr. Anne Moscona, professor of pediatrics and of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, said in a journal news release.

Another expert agreed that the flu strain could someday pose a threat to people.

"Infections that threaten wildlife and human lives remind us how our health is intermingled on this dynamic planet," said Dr. Bruce Hirsch, attending physician in infectious diseases at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. He said that while transmission via direct contact between humans and harbor seals is unlikely, the virus could find other ways to get to people.

"A dangerous virus infecting mammals increases the risk to us -- not by direct infection -- but by evolutionary development of even more riskier strains," Hirsch explained. For example, he said, the strain might pass from seals to birds, expand its presence in the environment and mutate in ways that make it easily passed to or between humans.

Scientists from several organizations, including Columbia University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, co-wrote the new report. They said that flu viruses found in mammals, such as the H1N1 "swine flu" that emerged in 2009, can put people's health at risk. The new seal flu, they warned, presents a similar threat to humans.

The researchers analyzed the DNA of a virus linked to the death of 162 harbor seals in 2011 off the coasts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Five autopsies revealed that the seals died from infection with a type of flu known as H3N8.

Third West Nile Case Reported In Sedgwick County

Health officials say this is shaping up to be the worst year for the disease since 2004.

Reporter: KAKE News
Email Address: news@kake.com

Friday, August 3, 2012

Local health officials are on alert now that West Nile virus has returned to Kansas. Via Christi officials say three cases have now been confirmed in Sedgwick County.

The Centers for Disease Control reports Kansas is one of 24 states to report human cases of West Nile this year.

Health officials say 2012 is turning out to be a bad year for West Nile. They say cases are turning up earlier than normal and more serious illnesses of the virus have been reported so far this year than any since 2004. So far this year, 241 human cases have been reported in 24 states, including four deaths.

Health officials believe the mild winter, early spring and very hot summer have fostered breeding of the mosquitoes that spread the virus to people. Most West Nile infections are reported in August and September, so it's not clear how bad this year will be.

"Unless the weather changes dramatically, we'll see more cases (in 2012) than we have in the last couple of years," said Roger Nasci of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mosquitoes pick up the virus from birds they bite and then spread it to people. West Nile virus was first reported in the United States in 1999.

Experts say the best way to prevent West Nile is to avoid mosquito bites. Insect repellants, screens on doors and windows and wearing long sleeves and pants are some of the recommended strategies. Also, empty standing water from buckets, kiddie pools and other places to discourage mosquito breeding.

More swine flu cases confirmed in Ohio

By Lauren Pack

Staff Writer....... Aug. 6, 2012. Posted 7 August............

Four additional cases of the H3N2 virus or swine flu have been confirmed in Butler County according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are now 14 cases identified in Butler County linked to swine exposure at the Butler County Fair and one case in Clark County linked to the exposure to hogs at the Ohio State Fair, the CDC announced Monday.

Those who were sickened are between the ages of 3 and 36 years old, and none have resulted in hospitalization.

Also on Monday, the Ohio Department of Health hosted a statewide conference call with all local health departments. Local departments have been urged to work with agriculture and fair officials to post necessary signage and to speak directly with those working in livestock facilities to ensure necessary care is taken to avoid further transmission of the H3N2 strain.

The first cases in Ohio surfaced during the final days of the Butler County Fair and by the end of last week 10 cases had been confirmed in the county with another 10 samples taken for testing, according to Pat Burg. Four additional cases were found from that testing.

The county department is being assisted by CDC and state health department staff, she said.

The H3N2 virus that made visitors to the Butler County Fair sick last week was first discovered last fall. Other confirmed cases were in Indiana and Hawaii, according to CDC officials.

Spike in West Nile Cases

WPMI-TV

updated 8/15/2012...

(MOBILE, Ala.) - States across the country are seeing a spike in the number of West Nile Virus cases. The Centers for Disease Control says it's the worst outbreak in years.

Monday, both Oklahoma and North Carolina reported their first deaths from the virus. In Mississippi, there have been 59 cases and one death. In Louisiana, there have been 52 cases and six deaths. Texas is the hardest hit state with 336 cases and at least 10 deaths.

However, Mobile County has not experienced a similar spike. Director of Epidemiology Melissa Tucker says since 2006, there have been no reported deaths of West Nile and just a total of 23 cases. Last year, there were six cases. And so far this year, there have been two reported in Mobile County.

"When you have any novel virus, that's brand new to an area, you're going to have some extreme cases of it, and I think that's what's happening in Texas right now," said Tucker.

The elderly and people with weak immune systems are more susceptible to being infected. Health officials recommend removing all standing water near your home. That includes, drilling holes in swings so water drains out and changing water in pet dishes. Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. So if you can stand it, wear long sleeves and pants. Also, spray EPA registered bug spray to reduce your risk.
