Hospitals grapple with brutal flu season that could get even worse

By Jonathan LaPook CBS News January 8, 2018, 6:46 PM

It is flu season, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the number of cases is up sharply, with high activity reported in 26 states.

At the Palomar Medical Center near San Diego, the new year ushered in a brutal flu season.

"The day came when we had extended waits in the emergency department up to eight or nine hours for a patient to be seen," said Michelle Gunnett, emergency room nursing director.

Not to brag as I did when Kansas raised it speed limit in the early 2000's. I stated I had avoided any tickets for years.. Now I need not worry.

The first day of the speed limits being raised I got busted speeding. Trying to get distance between me and a 350 PU.. Small towns find money to operate and most use the courts.

Well I haven't had a cold, sniffles or any seasonal problems in 30+ years.. And in great health as far as I can tell. VA wants me to make appointment with my doctor.. In about a month.

I shall learn if I am doing okay....... :shrug

Load up on Vitamin D.
It's not a perfect prevention but it's BETTER than Flu shots in everyway.

Then I have been lucky all these years.. What with parents in grocery handling so many items on shelve, passing off their child's germs gotten from the play ground not to mention what the cart has gathered now.. :eek

And this is but one hour of one day....

Driving home from work today, they were talking about this on the radio. The city of San Diego has had more flu deaths this year than the entire state that I live in.

I haven't had the flu for probably better than 30 years. I think I've had a flu vaccine shot every year for about the last 20 years. So far it's worked for me.

Insurance covers flu shots 100%.
The ACA makes it a law that you have to have insurance.
People could avoid getting the flu by following the law and taking advantage of the coverage.

I was in a coma for 3 weeks about 5 years ago due to the flu. The doctors were telling my wife I would most likely not survive. I highly recommend getting your flu shot and if you get flu symptoms, treating them seriously. I am a 6 foot 2 inch, 290lb former college linebacker and it kicked my butt. If it can almost take a person like me out, everyone needs to take it seriously.
