Chick-Fil-A to Use Chicken Without Antibiotics
NEW YORK February 11, 2014 (AP)
By CANDICE CHOI AP Food Industry Writer
Associated Press

Chick-fil-A said Tuesday it plans to serve only chicken raised without antibiotics within the next five years.

The Atlanta-based chain said it's working with suppliers to build up an adequate supply for its nearly 1,800 restaurants. It is asking suppliers to work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to verify that no antibiotics are administered on the chickens at any point.

The use of antibiotics to fatten up farm animals and prevent disease has become a growing concern in recent years. The Food and Drug Administration has warned to decrease antibiotics in meat because the practice could lead to the growth of antibiotic-resistant germs.

Many consumers simply don't like the idea of eating meat that has been fed antibiotics, and serving meat raised without antibiotics can be a selling point for companies.

Tim Tassopoulos, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of operations, said in a phone interview that the company planned to keep customers updated on its progress and eventually advertise its conversion in its restaurants.

"We're going to make sure customers know," he said.

Chick-fil-A isn't the first chain to tout meat raised without antibiotics. Chipotle, which has surged in popularity in recent years, has also made its commitment to "responsibility raised" meat an integral part of its identity. Supply issues have forced the Mexican food chain to use conventionally raised meat at times, most notably for beef. For chicken, Chipotle says less than 1 percent of its meat was conventionally raised last year.

Meanwhile, Tassopoulos says that the switch to chickens raised without antibiotics would likely result in higher prices for customers, but said the company is working with suppliers to ensure the impact is "minimal."

Chick-fil-A said its conversion will require "changes along every point of the supply chain — from the hatchery to the processing plant." The company's suppliers include Tyson, Purdue and Pilgrim's Pride.....

Outstanding.

I trust Chick-Fil-A but i don't trust Tyson foods. Chick-fil-a is going to have to spot test.
Tyson and i suppose some of the other large chicken corps do a lot a nasty stuff.

I find this fascinating.
I can't help but wonder about the impact to cost. Food of this nature can be more expensive (although I have never sought out such a product myself).

I am also curious as to the statistics on this.

Food for thought...
In a nationwide poll conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, 57 percent of consumers indicated they had meat and poultry raised without antibiotics available at their local supermarkets. In that poll, 61 percent of consumers also indicated they would pay 5 cents or more a pound extra; and 37 percent indicated they would pay a dollar a pound or more extra for meat and poultry raised without antibiotics.
But the data our secret shoppers gathered on the prices of “no antibiotics administered” products at the 119 stores that carried them indicated they can actually be found at lower prices than you might expect. In March, the national average price for all chicken breasts, including conventional, was $3.17 per pound. Yet our shoppers found chicken breasts that had been raised without antibiotics at QFC for $2.99 per pound and on sale at Whole Foods for $1.99 per pound.

Call me crazy but I just don't believe this chick filet here in Russellville is going to bypass Tyson right down the street and order more expensive chicken from an out of state company.

The OP reports they are working with suppliers to make the transition to antibiotic free chicken. This is the same company that closes on Sunday as an expression of their values but their sincerity in pledging to serve only antibiotic free chicken must be questionable.

I don't know why they close on Sunday, I think most places should and half day Wednesday too.
When I read about this I'm thinking where chikafilet is and the big Tyson plant almost across the street. Maybe some places will be 'excluded' in their marketing ploy.
you gotta see the forest for the trees.
If this is legit and they go all the way to the grower to make sure this is not happening, good for them good for whoever eats there.
But even if you get a commitment from Tyson that's not saying the growers will comply. Personally I think they should be thrown in jail and pay a fine and closed down if they are caught feeding antibiotics, arsenic, steroids or formaldehyde on chicken farms.

Or, Tyson, as a capitalist entity, may well produce chicken raised without antibiotics in order to meet the demand.
