Haha. I've always had enough hair for two people, but I finally came to appreciate the distress of hair loss after this last baby, when at least 25% of my hair fell out, all in about two weeks' time. That wouldn't have been a huge deal, since my hair is so thick to begin with, except that every bit of it fell out from the front and sides- my hairline basically receded about an inch and a half. I was seriously bald in the front and on the sides. And the way my hair is, there was really no way to cover it. I just had to laugh it off. My friends and colleagues said it was about the weirdest thing they'd ever seen, and I thought it was too; I lost hair after my other pregnancies, but not that much, and all over my head, not only on the front and sides. I never really heard of anything like this before.
My baby will be 11 months tomorrow, and my hair's been growing back in for maybe seven or eight months now (it all fell out when I was around 3 months postpartum). It's all growing back as thick as ever, but the parts that fell out are only about two or three inches long so far. It looks like I cut bangs, even though I didn't, and I've got weird tufts that stick out around my ears when I wear a ponytail. But I'm just glad it's growing back (even if it is much grayer than before). It would seriously suck to lose one's hair permanently. Edit: this was me around the time my hair started falling out; in this pic, my hairline is already nearly an inch higher than previously, and it really changed the way my face looked. It got worse before it was over. Thank heavens it grew back. http://www.politicalwrinkles.com/408158-post92.html Last edited by 1069; 10-31-2012 at 06:23 PM.. |

You know how you can tell Italian women are embarrassed by the amount of hair they have?...

I type for bariatric surgery surgeons. Hair loss is common in the so-called rapid weight loss phase and what the surgeons advise the patients is to take over-the-counter kelp, zinc or selenium. In bariatric surgery patients their hair grows back within a few months but I can see how distressing it may be.

Unbeknownst to me, my thyroid was acting up and not doing it's job. So several months ago, I began losing hair by the brushfuls everytime I brushed it. I mean, literally, handfuls of hair. Now I have long hair and I was worried what the heck was going on and to top matters off, I had a couple of finger nails on my left hand, (I'm lefthanded) loosen up and fall off. They still haven't grown back to what they were and prob'ly won't. The nail will grow but won't attach to the nail bed so there's a gap between the two. I have to keep them every short or they get caught on whatever and rip backwards. Anyway, freaking out I went to the doctor and he said it was my thyroid and that once I start taking medicine for it, my hair will stop falling out rather quickly. But he added my nails will take much longer to heal themselves and possibly won't ever be the same. Yea. Anyway, thank goodness it wasn't anything more serious than that.
