Scientists discover virus that kills all types of breast cancer ‘within seven days’

If this proves to be true, it will be the discovery of the century.

Scientists at the Penn State College of Medicine said this week they have discovered a virus that is capable of killing all types of breast cancer "within seven days" of first introduction in a laboratory setting.

The virus, known as adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2), is naturally occurring and carried by up to 80 percent of humans, but it does not cause any disease.

Researchers learned of its cancer-killing properties in 2005, after Penn State scientists observed it killing cervical cancer cells. They also found that women who carried the AAV2 virus and human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, had a lower propensity to develop cervical cancer.

When combined in a lab recently, AAV2 eradicated all the breast cancer cells "within seven days," according to researchers. Better still, it proved capable of wiping out cancer cells at multiple stages, negating the need for differing treatments used today.

"If we can determine which viral genes are being used, we may be able to introduce those genes into a [therapy]," explained Penn State research associate Samina Alam. "If we can determine which pathways the virus is triggering, we can then screen new drugs that target those pathways. Or we may simply be able to use the virus itself."

The Center for Disease Control says that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting American women, causing more deaths than any other form of the disease.

The American Cancer Society estimates that up to 39,520 women in the U.S. will die from cancer just this year, out of about 230,480 new cases discovered by doctors.

You hear about these amazing things... and then women simply continue to die of breast cancer.
Will this actually help? Will this technology- this discovery- actually be used to help women of all socioeconomic levels who are suffering from breast cancer this year? Next year? Ten years from now? Twenty...?

I want to believe in this, and hope it doesn't simply sink without a ripple, as other amazing "breakthroughs"- potential treatments for cancer, for AIDS- have done.
Breast cancer is such a bitch; it not only steals women's quality of life once we have it, but it robs us of our peace of mind even before that. Nobody can ever put those "one in eight" statistics out of their minds. Nobody can ever be entirely comfortable in their bodies, knowing how statistically likely it is that this killer is lurking somewhere in our futures.

Please let this be something real, something that works.

I would love to believe this. I saw this story over the weekend, and I'll admit that I got a little teary eyed. BC has hit far too close to home in recent years. But I have yet to see this article appear in any reputable news source. There are different types of BC, and they act different ways. You know IIRC, I think I saw a similar story (from another weird source) re: leukemia. I hope this isn't some stupid internet hoax. I'll bring it up to my specialist next month and report back if people are interested.

BTW 10, those 1 in 8 odd are lifetime odds. (they are lower when you are younger & go up as you age). Things like having children earlier and low body fat will also help your odds.

More ... I read the Penn St release, and it says they tested 3 types of BC, not all types.

I wonder if these releases aren't just fund raisers to give people hope so that they'll keep donating.

I wonder if the drug companies and the government would allow something as profitable as cancer to be "cured", if there were a quick, effective, and simple cure for it.
Hundreds of thousands make their living off "treating" cancer.

Usually I deplore that sort of conspiracy-theorist thinking... but I can't help but wonder. I don't really believe it could be true, but you never know. So many millions- billions- are made off cancer research and cancer treatment each year. Some people might not be too happy if it turned out cancer could be cured by drinking apple cider vinegar or something.

Yes I understand your skepticism. I was dumbfounded and skeptical myself. My grandmother died of breast cancer after suffering for a length of time.

Here is a little more digging:

There's a book out there somewhere- might be out of print -called The Cancer Conspiracy
It'll make you wonder.
But I really think we are making such breakthroughs because of DNA mapping. Which was only done in the 90s. There's probably a lot more to come. :)

It's actually the FDA that will be the huge roadblock. As usual.

Yeah but drug company employees have families too. DH said if it pans out (in another 10+ years of research), it will be pricey as hell. Of course there are different kinds of BC, and further reading suggests that not all forms were tested.

Thank you Saltwn. I did some research this afternoon so I could have something to print out.

Absolutely. We said today, there's always Canada.

BTW, a year ago I was diagnosed with 3 forms of benign breast cancer (all in situ, none invasive). I test every 6 months to see if that's changed. I'll go back next month (10, this year I want it all done before Halloween :thumbsup). Obviously any little development is of great personal interest to me. :)
