Post Oklahoma’s Republican Governor Just Dealt an Unexpected Blow to the NRA

Quote:
Late Friday night, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin vetoed a bill that would have let adults carry guns without training or a permit, striking a blow to the National Rifle Association in a deeply conservative state.

“Oklahomans believe that law-abiding individuals should be able to defend themselves,” Fallin said in a statement. “I believe the firearms requirement we currently have in state law are few and reasonable.”

The bill would have allowed Oklahomans to carry a handgun without a state-issued permit, like in a dozen other states with “constitutional carry” provisions. The measure drew opposition from businesses and law enforcement officials, who warned that it could threaten public safety.

In her statement Friday, Fallin reiterated her support for the right to bear arms, noting that she had previously signed bills on open and concealed carry. The Republican governor, whose stint in office ends this year, warned that the bill would eliminate “the current ability of Oklahoma law enforcement to distinguish between those carrying guns who have been trained and vetted, and those who have not.”

“I believe the firearms laws we currently have in place are effective, appropriate, and minimal,” she said.

She made the right move.

Correct...

The governor's veto can be summed up in one word...

Infringing...

Somebody's opinion. Here is mine:

The politician does not understand that it is already against the law to cause the death of an innocent person by the misuse of a weapon.

It's to bad really, Fallin is a pretty good governor in most respects. She missed the mark on this one though, hopefully they have enough votes to override.

I don't remember reading in the 2nd Amendment anything about having to be trained and vetted to exercise your Constitutional right.

We should exercise the same caution when allowing people to vote.

You actually make a very good point. If the state can apply restrictions to an Amendment that clearly states that you can't, what would prevent states from taking advantage of the precedent that is established by the rulings by SCOTUS allowing for such requirements and restrictions in regards to voting as long as those requirements and restrictions apply to all equally?

I honestly believe that in order to vote, you should be materially vested in the jurisdiction in which you wish to cast your vote. For example, if you don't pay Federal tax, you should NOT be allowed to vote for candidate running for a Federal office. I wonder how the left would like that rule?

I'll be on the unpopular side of this, I'm sure.

While some view it as 'infringing', I view it as public safety.

Giving a gun to someone who has not been taught how to use it, is like handing the car keys to someone who hasn't been taught how to drive.

That being said, just as most high schools (at least they used to) made driver's ed a course for those who needed training before going for their permit, I feel the same should be a voluntary course in gun education.
