Post Without Obama, once-booming gun industry poised to shrink

Quote:
President Trump’s election appears to be negatively affecting gun sales in the U.S. and the bubble appears to be bursting despite a staunch advocate for gun rights in the White House and Republicans ruling Congress.

"President Obama was the best gun salesman the world has ever seen," Karl Sorken, a production manager at Battle Rifle Co. in Houston. Sorken is an Army veteran and self-described liberal who voted for Obama and notes the change for the industry under Trump is a topic of conversation in the shop.

Fears of government limits on guns -- some real, some perceived -- led to a surge in demand during Obama's tenure and manufacturers leapt to keep up. Over the decade ending in 2015, the number of U.S. companies licensed to make firearms jumped 362 percent.

"The trends really almost since Election Day or election night have been that gun sales have slacked off," said Robert Spitzer, political science department chairman at State University of New York at Cortland. "When you take away Barack Obama and you give the Republicans control of both houses of Congress, which is extremely friendly to the gun lobby, then the political pressure subsides. And that surely is at least a key part of the explanation for the drop-off in sales."

The Washington Post reported that the FBI conducted about 500,000 fewer background checks in December 2016 then in 2015. Gun sales this year have reportedly dropped about 17 percent.

They're nice guns, but I prefer my .22 pellet rifle.

The firearms industry has a history of big up's fallowed by big down turns. It is the nature of the business, as it the case with many others.

Personally I like the idea that we can slow down and take a break. The right wingers in the USA have been in over drive stocking up for the revolution the left might start. Muslim's? I think extra was bought just for them, just in case.

But let a left wing anything get to cozy with power and the ability to pass regressive laws, and the whole thing starts over once again..

Firearms business owners attributed Obama paranoia, the specter of any kind of gun control that could come from the administration, to sales increases. I wouldn't even doubt they vote Democratic in private when possible, Democrats in office mean better business for the industry. It ensures their profits, which is what motivates corporations. The panic buying however is over, so of course sales will fall back to normal levels.

Oh look and eight years later he didn't grab the guns, not even a phone call. The reality never, ever came close to living up to the fears.

On the plus side, hopefully we'll see some good deals more often since the demand is falling.

It never came from him directly because of fierce opposition. Would he have if he could? we'll never really know. But I suspect so. That dammed Constitution is so limiting on the POTUS.

That said, enough progressives I enough states tried. Try owning a common capacity magazine in New York. And don't get caught in New Jersey with a pistol without a residency permit.

As for the gun industry, this is great for the average buyer because, with lower demand, the prices are coming down.

The Truth is that the NRA and gun owners were in large part another factor that nailed the coffin lid on the left wing anti gun agenda.

And the left wing agenda in general as well...
