How so?

Do you think they're defenseless?
Or possibly you don't realize that they're risk to crime is much lower than in the U.S.

While our U.S. culture includes a 2nd amendment to gun ownership, let's not needlessly denigrate a society that has less of the violence problem that the U.S. society has.

When a government bans weapons for its citizens, I see a weak government. I see people who have no means of defending themselves as more defenseless than those who do have the means.

Our government has the Second Amendment as a guarantee to it that problems will be solved the Constitutional way. If the Constitution is revoked by any dictator wannabe, then the Second Amendment will kick it in the ass. Unalienable rights do not require that they be written on paper or parchment, let's not forget.

"no means of defending themselves"...

At some stage, reality needs to be considered. Actual relative risks need to be evaluated.
You focus on whether or not a weapon is available for "defense" while ignoring they do not need that defense like is supposedly "needed" in the U.S.
The country's homicide rate is associated with a stable and prosperous society with low inequality and high levels of development.

....
To put it all into perspective, the U.S. saw more than 12,000 firearm-related homicides in 2008, while Japan had only 11.
I guess maybe it's a question as to whether they need that "defense" in the first place...

Well, that is a conundrum those victims in Japan, dead and alive, could have dealt with. One person dead, several thousand dead, an innocent life is an innocent life. Sort of like the likelihood of a fire starting in a relatively well-kept and orderly house in any country.

It's news because it's unusual. Killings in the states are common.

kinda looks a couple bad guys bit the dust from shots fired by a local geezer that even packs heat even when he works on his pick-up truck.

<Homeowner, confronted in his garage, fatally shoots two in south St. Louis>

<ST. LOUIS • A homeowner working in his garage Tuesday afternoon shot and killed two armed intruders who had demanded the man’s pickup, police said.>

<St. Louis police Capt. Mary Warnecke said the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in 4100 block of Taft Avenue, the block east of Morganford Road.>

<She said the homeowner, 73, had a firearm in his pocket and was able to kill both intruders, who fell dead on a small concrete area between the garage and his one-story frame home.>

<Warnecke said officers took the homeowner’s pistol and the pistols of the two intruders. She said officers had not identified the two but they were men in their late teens or early 20s. Both were dead at the scene.>

<The homeowner’s truck was parked between the garage and house. The overhead doors of the garage were closed. The intruders came in through a side door, police said.>

<Of the homeowner, Warnecke said, “He is understandably quite upset>

The stats I gave were for U.S.

I would suspect you are right regarding Japan.
Japan's law description:
The weapons law begins by stating "No one shall possess a firearm or firearms or a sword or swords", and very few exceptions are allowed.[40] However, citizens are permitted to possess firearms for hunting and sport shooting, but only after submitting to a lengthy licensing procedure.[41]
I have a kitchen, I have knives, including several Japanese high end knives. I also have guns, several in fact, and a license to carry them. Yet none of those deadly inanimate objects have ever shown any inclination to murder anyone. So it must be something else.

But the thread subject is Japan knife attack, is it not?

So, apples and bananas.

I'm still reeling from the jab at a need for "that defense".

More nonsense from the king of nonsense.

Do you really believe that if someone in the US killed 19 and wounded dozens more, that it wouldn't make the news?

More important, do you think that the members here are dumb enough to believe that?

Knives Kill More People Each Year Than Rifles: Time For Knife Control?
NOVEMBER 11, 2014 By Sean Davis

According to crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), knives are consistently used to kill people far more often than rifles are used. And the numbers aren’t even close: five times as many murders were committed with knives than were committed with rifles last year.

The FBI statistics show that knives have been used as a murder weapon far more often than rifles — even those evil “assault weapons” we hear so much about — for quite a while. In 2013, knives or other cutting instruments were used to kill 1,490 victims. In contrast, rifles were the cause of death of 285 murder victims. Shotguns were used in 308 murders. In 2009, the ratio was very similar: knives were used in five times as many murders as rifles....
