Actually I think your observation is interesting and correct that people do that more these days. But I think the reason for it is because there are more loud elements that oppose their freedom to have that culture than there has ever been. People tend to react in a way that puts things out there more when some in the culture want to take those things away. We see that on any number of social issues.
