Transfer the domain name to them. Let them pay a fair price to transfer it. It isn't making any money so value is relative. In this case friends may be willing to keep the founders site alive so at least it doesn't disappear. And he gets to see his hard work and dedication live on.

They will still have to pay the annual forum renewal fees unless they buy a Vbulletin license. Right now it costs money.

Those ratings sites' dollar amounts are not realistic. You take them with a very large grain of salt. I could see this site going for 800-1000 though.
