I just got a good endorsement for microsoft security essentials. That's probably what I'll be going with.
However, this guy wasn't so high on firefox.
So still stuck as to what browser to use at this point.
Can anyone explain to me the difference in chrome, firefox and internet explorer and why one might be better than the other?

Thanks...

Spencer on here recommended Chrome to me a year ago as my pages weren't loading fast enough. I didn't notice difference in the speed of loading between Chrome and Internet Explorer but the pages were the ones on here with Youtube clips so maybe that is why they were slow.

I like the spelling checker on Chrome that automatically highlights in red any spelling errors.

I also like the extensions on Chrome. I use Adblock and I see absolutely no ads at all anywhere. I also like the Do Not Track Me extension. It used to really annoy me before I added those two extensions. I would be listening to a playlist on Youtube and every few songs an ad would interrupt the music and now there are none. Also I would for instance be browsing to buy a camera, and then on other sites ads for cameras, or the department store's ads for other goods would appear and now I get none of those either. It may not be important to some but I prefer no ads at all and I don't get any. There are plenty of other extensions on Chrome - some useful and some just for fun.

I installed Firefox for 5 minutes when this site was down to see if I could get in here. I immediately uninstalled it. I feel happy with Chrome.

Just read a couple reviews and the latest lists Chrome as the top browser.
Top free antivirus/internet security is Microsoft Security Essentials.
Top proprietary antivirus/internet security is Bitdefender.

So i think i know what I'm going with.

Thanks for the input.

You're welcome.

The good thing about Avast though, which I will uninstall as I am not able to run that as well as MS Security Essentials, is that Avast rates websites on a Google search page as to whether it is safe or not. I assume MS Security doesn't rate different sites on the search page. I do agree though that MS Security has got good reviews.

I have Malwarebytes installed as well which I have been using for a while. Any computer savvy person here know whether my computers are protected well enough now?

I am running Windows Vista on Firefox.
SUPERAntispyware and MSE updated regularly.
Not many problems here.

Avast! recently caught a bugger of a virus for me. I'm happy with it. I use chrome for some things and FF for others. I almost never use IE because it is too slow and it hangs. I still have windows defender enabled. Only thing that interferes with Avast! I've experienced is Norton (better known as peeYOU) and McGafee ( ucky yuck). But microsoft has some good stuff just what you are comfortable with imho.

I still use IE and never got a warning --- anti-virus is mcafee.
Recently my computer contracted something pretty bad.
This seemed to happen after i noticed y'all talking about this malware warning.
Also around the same time i had just been to fafsa.gov filling out the crap for my son's college stuff and just figured it was a result of the chinese attacking government websites i recently read about.
First thing that happened was something kept shutting off my macafee firewall. But everything seemed to function okay.
Then i started getting kicked offline.
So when i called tech support they found maleware/spyware all over my laptop.
So much they couldn't get rid of it all. And when they started to get ready to reinstall the operating system they discovered my hard drive had been damaged.
So i guess my question is when i get my laptop back with the new hard drive what do you all suggest for web browser and internet security because clearly IE and mcafee failed me.

Thanks...

GS
I avoid McAffee as though it were written by an alleged murderer.

I use IE only when I have no choice or feel the need to be reminded that even giant, established companies can produce junk that's overpriced even when given away for free.

I use Norton for antivirus. I'm split between FireFox and Opera for best browser.

got the computer back.
up and running.
reinstalled all my music software and plugins.
made a back up image and a repair disc.
got chrome and microsoft security essentials installed and running.
the best thing is all my recorded sonar files were saved on my flash drive and after running a scan they were found to be clean and they loaded into sonar just fine.
thanks for all the advice.
