Somehow I had missed Deja Vu - but it was on one of the movie channels this week and I watched it. It really was a good movie. Usually Denzel's movies are good ... a couple serious duds, like that one where he takes over the hospital (bo-ring) and The Preacher's Wife (uber bo-ring) - but everybody gets to be given a break when they've made as many good ones as he has. One of my favorites - which didn't get much attention - was Devil With a Blue Dress. I had read the book series about Easy Rawlins and I thought they did an excellent job of recreating the feel of the books...and such good complex mysteries!

..and then turn around and do "The African Queen" and play a man incredibly noble and decent (in spite of his shortcomings). Bogies had gift that's rarely seen these days. IMO, the only actors I can think of today that come anywhere near the depth and range of Bogie would be Denzel Washington and Jack Nicholson (I'm sure some here will disagree).

Interesting.

I have always found Jack Nicholson played Jack Nicholson. Now, he's very GOOD at playing Jack Nicholson...but I've never believed in his characters particularly. I don't think of him as the same kind of movie star as Bogie - i think of him more as a Cary Grant (who was very good at playing Cary Grant - but that's ALL he ever was).

I believe Edward Norton, Sean Penn, Daniel Day Lewis are just three of the actors today who are capable of completely immersing themselves into various kinds of roles.

Edited to add: omg - how could I forget Johnny Depp? He has the most astonishing range as an actor!

I like Michael Caine, Gene Hackman. I am forgetting so many people here. But I have always enjoyed their work.

I think that he gets cast a lot as characters that fit his persona, but he has an extraordinary ability to step into whatever character he wants to.

Edward Norton is a guy that I'd put pretty high up on the scale of great actors, but Penn's never impressed me that much and I haven't really seen of D.D. Lewis to really judge his ability.
